How bad are the 2011 EcoBoost and 5.0?

I bought a 2011 3.5 Eco-boost scew 4x4 brand new. I babied it, had it serviced on the reg, etc. It had 85k on it and started “limping” on me one day. I “limped” it into the dealership, they said both timing chains had stretched and toasted my turbos. $7k to repair it. I asked why the first time I hear about the issue is when it gernades. They had no come back.
They however did take very good care of me. They gave me a great deal on a new truck and full value for my old truck (with a toasted motor) I left happy, but I went with the 5.0 on my new one. It’s ok, but not as fun to drive, I loved that eco-boost torque...

My 2011 5.0 burned a little oil when I first got it, but that stopped. I change oil once a year and drive 10k kms a year. I rustproof, so no real rust problems not to say there isn't any. Mine is the supercab so it doesn't have the cab corner rust issue. Biggest expense so far is replacing the tires. Still bone stock but for tires, air and oil filters. I have to change plugs soon, and also have to pay someone to remove those failed wheel lug nuts that swelled up. Sometimes the electronics have a funny issue where the driver's side window stops responding to the button but restarting the truck clears it up. I drove nothing but Hondas before this truck and by those cost me more in maintenance per kilometre than the Ford has.

I wouldn't go to the trouble to trade up for a truck just one year newer. Keep what you have for a little longer if you must then move up to at least 2013 or 2014. I don't think there is anything WRONG with any of the 2011's. My wife's mother has a 2011 with the 3.7 V6 and has had no issues. But everything I read says there are fewer gremlins with the 13's and 14's.
I bought my 2014 used 2 1/2 years ago. I'm quite pleased with the 5.0 and the truck in general. I found that when buying used I could get a newer truck, with fewer miles on it with the 5.0 for the same money as the 3.5 turbo. It is my opinion that the 5.0 will give fewer problems long term, but that is still debatable. I know you'll spend less on maintenance on the 5.0 over the life of the truck. Fuel mileage is close enough to call a tie. The 3.5 does pull heavy loads faster than the 5.0 and if towing a lot it may be the best choice.

I've had some issues with my 2011 - steering rack, blend door motor, and a few things - but I'd never go back to the 5.4 again.
The 5.0 uses less gas, makes more power, and revs like you forgot the flywheel compared to the 5.4.

I don’t think it’s worth it, and no trading up a model year just to go from a 5.4 to a 5.0 isn’t worth it for the engine. The 5.4L/ 6 speed is a great combination and the 5.4 has its own benefits.

I had an '11 FX4 Ecoboost. Only issue was the EPAS which will happen on a 3.5 or 5.0

Go to www.f150ecoboost.net and search for "blown motor". There are a fair amount of threads regarding this. One caveat is that a lot of trucks that blew their motors were tuned or modified in some way. Still, if you're buying used, you don't really know what you're getting. The 5.0 has it's issues too, but not nearly as much IMO. I would personally shoot for something newer, because you're taking a pretty big gamble on a truck that isn't that much better than what you have.

I have 189k miles on my 2011 FX4, and the only issues so far have been the fuse relay, rust in the quarter panels, and moisture in the passenger floorboard. around 200k miles I will do a complete tune up, but in my previous jobs I have several F150s that went to 250 - 275 thousand miles and only one blew the motor at 130k miles.

I've got almost 100k on my 2012 EcoBoost. No problems, not even the dreaded bucking/stalling/water ingestion issue. I drilled the hole in my intercooler about 2 years ago primarily out of curiosity of what would come out (I live in N Mississippi, driven to the Gulf coast towing my camper yearly since I bought the truck) and very little oil or water was present in the intercooler. I've done plugs about every 35k, so it will be due another set here shortly. I've always used Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 on every oil change, and change the oil every 10k.
Worst problem I've had with it was that I had to replace both front wheel hubs about 15k miles ago.
