Help with 2011 F-150 Alternator problems
Hey,
Ok so, I'm having some issue with my 2011 F-150 truck, specifically the alternator. I've had the truck 2 yrs now with no problems. Two weeks ago I started the truck and after 1 min the battery light came on. Went under the hood, played with some wires to no avail. Needless to say it happens every time I start the truck.
I called my local Ford dealership to ask them what the problem could be. (I could bring the truck in but warranty expired 5000 km ago and it'll cost over $100 just to test it, am on a budget so that is not an option at this moment. I don't know anybody who has one either).
So instead I got a replacement alternator and installed that today hoping that it would have fixed the problem. It didn't. Battery was charging at 13.40 (ish) and now it's at 15 (before I replaced alt. and after). Battery light is still on. I checked the wiring for battery connection, nothing. Cleaned connection at starter, nothing. Checked and cleaned connection at alternator, still nothing. Thinking maybe wiring harness? But again, that's a $1700 bill not including labor. My Ford is a 3.7 v6.
Wondering if anybody else has had this problem with their Ford. Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated! Am at my wits end..

Is the battery loosing charge anywhere? Are the cables clean? Have you checked fuses?
I don't know much about these new f150's, I'm sure someone will jump in now and help yeah

If you didn't disconnect the battery B+ wire when you checked/cleaned it do so to reset the PCM. Some DTC's will latch and will not reset unless manually done. If it didn't reset then we won't be able to help you mcuh unless you give us the DTC code which is being pulled. You could check the Asense (alternator sense) fuse in the PDB. Don't know what fuse number that is for 2011.
Edit - I just looked for you, check fuse 45, Alternator Sense, it is a 10A in the PDB (power distrubution box under the hood)

Measuring the voltage across the terminals won't tell you whether or not a battery is good or bad. It needs to be load tested. I have one of these.

It will also test your charging system.
