Hello
I am hoping I can get some feed back on an issue which I have been since October 2013. Hope you are sitting in a comfortable chair and are having a coffee since his is a bit f a long story ... lol ..
... So, I am going to take their loaner out and see how it goes but in the meantime, I have tested 3 of my friends vehicles. Two of which were identical in year and drivetrain, the other was an ecoboost and guess what ... none of them exhibited the condition. I am going to meet with the dealership owner and let him know that I am going to start the process thru CAMVAP to get a resolution to this. I don’t want to blind side them since they have been pretty helpful.
So my question after this long drawn out story, Are any of you experiencing this condition or have heard of it?
Thanks

Thank you for reaching out about this; I'd like to look into it further. Have you begun the CAMVAP process as of today? Please let me know, as it will determine my next steps in best assisting you with this concern. Additionally, please send me a private message with your full name, dealership information, VIN, and best daytime contact number so I can look into some available options.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I have the same problem in my 2012 fx4 with the eco boost engine. I live on a pretty steep hill and the driveway is stone so I use 4wd every time I go back home. I found that it makes that clunking noise when I have my foot on the gas and switch it to 4wd. If I let off the gas and then switch it to 4wd and let it switch before applying the gas it does not do it. Also it does not do it all the time. It only does it once in awhile.

i have a question about the 4x4 systems on these trucks. how is it that you can shift at any speed into 4 high with out damaging anything. i would think the transfer case or front diff would grenade going from stationary to vehicle speed. i do know for 4 low you are supposed to be under 3 mph and in neutral when shifting into. so why not the same for 4 high. this is something i've always wondered about.
Unless these transfer cases are different than ths I have been in on older vehicles, this should help explain:
2H and 4H should have the same output gearing. Meaning that the output speed going through the transfer case to the wheels does not change RPM
4L actually takes the ouput from the transmission and changes the RPM of the transfer case output. This gives the engine a bigger mechanical advantage over the tires, which is why you can redline and only be going half the speed of normal driving.
The reason you are ABLE to shift into 4H at a higher rate of speed is that you aren't really changing anything as far as output from the transfer case, less the front system being engaged. It is always a good idea to not use the 4WD system unless you have to for safety or you become stuck. That was the original purpose. People have since changed the purpose for pleasure (i.e. mudding, testing performance).
If I am wrong in my assessment, by all means show me how. I am no way a transfer case or applied science expert. This has just been my experience.
EDIT: When shifting into 4H, I'm pretty sure it states that you should not be doing so under load and under a constant wheel speed. I have not had to do that. I tried not to use my 4x4 until I had to.

On my truck the front shafts are turning while in 2wd, I know because I checked on a lift and tried to stop one spinning at low rpm and it was definitely locked at the diff. however the hubs are not locked to the wheel, if you turn the truck off and there is no vacuum then the wheels are locked to the CV axles. Check yourself, just wear gloves haha

Hey I’m having a very similar issue. I’ve got a 12 Screw Ecoboost. Basically I’m already in 4h for long enough time that it should be engaged. I wen through all the advise procedures. Shift into 4h when your not on the throttle. Shift into 4h stopped. Etc. but at 40-60 there’s a loud thump sometimes two. It feels like it’s a CV axle issue do me or maybe a transfer case but I am at a loss and no idea where to go. I don’t have the funds to just replace it all because at this point it’s out of warranty. What did you ever find out???
