Poor Mileage 5.0
I have had my 2013 STX 4x4 Supercab with the 5.0 since new, and it has been brought to my attention that my mileage should be better than it is.
I'll start off with my data. This is all with no trailer and no tonneau cover, and totally stock setup. 5K mile oil changes with Valvoline full synthetic.
Initially when I first purchased the truck, I got 19-20 on the highway and usually 17+ in a combination of highway/stop and go. Once it got broken in( a few thousand miles I'd say), the mileage dropped moderately and I didn't think much of it, although I always thought that efficiency should improve after break-in.
Now, I get anywhere from 13 to 18. At 80 mph on flat flat interstate, I get no more than 15. If I drive 60 with a tailwind, I can occasionally get close to 20 if I drive like a grandma.
Now my question to what I should do about it. Is there something the dealer would be able to do by updating the software? If I got a tuner, would that help, or possibly do the same thing as the dealer could do? Or do these numbers actually seem consistent with everyone else? I'd like to see close to 17 at 80 mph with no wind. Or am I asking too much?
Thanks in advance

You are getting pretty good mpg's. When I was a young man I used to freak out about fuel economy. Now I don't care and I'm a lot happier. Anything above 14 mpg is the bonus as far as I'm concerned.

No way!!!! A 5.0 that gets bad MPGs?

Running about 17 mpg myself ---mixed city and highway........ pretty happy with that- it's a 6k lb full-sized v-8 4x4 truck----- it's better than I expected; I'm very happy with it. Just buy gas when it's about half gone and don't worry about it

There are a lot of variables and the biggest one is weather meaning temperatures. Colder temps mean less mpg's. Just throwing that out there. I can get anywhere from 11-17mpg's interstate driving 80mph. Lower end if there is a strong headwind, higher with no headwind. Highway driving 16-21mpg's driving 50-65ish'. I also am sitting higher and have larger than stock tires though.
Are you using just the mpg display on the dash or are you calculating it yourself? The display isn't the most accurate. Doing the math yourself after a couple fill ups will give you a better idea of your fuel economy, but of course that will be mixed driving and not specific to just interstate driving.

Once a month or so I drive to a town 40 miles away just so my mpg isn't at 4.5. I have a 3 block commute with a lot of idle time so it stays at about 11 for two days then works it way back down to 4ish but I love her.

The faster you go, the more impact (usually negative) it will have on your average MPG. If you want MPG close to what the window sticker says:
1. Keep your foot out of it, keep driving like a grandma
2. Use cruise control for long stretches
3. Check for proper tire inflation

Nothing.. That's normal this time of the year.
Check your air filter.
Hell, eco's get that a lot of the time.
Plus, I just filled my 36 gallon tank up for $52 dollars.
Life is good at the moment.
