Default Google Pixel Phone and Sync. They Don't Like Each Other

So I got my new Google Pixel XL last week and just like any other phone I've had, I get it paired up with the truck and give it all of its permissions it has needed just like always.

My truck is a 2013 and this is probably the 6th phone I have paired and used with this truck. My employer frequently gets us all new phones so we go through them pretty fast. I say this to emphasize I am quite familiar with how the system works and how to get everything running right.

However, this phone brings a new and interesting issue. This does have Android 7.1, which no other phone has yet so I am suspicious of that being a culprit. The issue is when I get in the truck and start it, Sync alerts me to EVERY SINGLE text message I have received since I last turned off the truck. Just one DING DING DING after another thinking or acting as if I am getting constant new text messages. This of course severely bogs down the MFT and Sync system and it starts acting up and slowing down.

I have tried deleting the phone from Sync, deleting Sync from the phone, disconnecting the battery for 1 or more hours to reset it all, etc. Nothing makes any difference.

I have spoken with Google support and they blame Sync and I'm sure Sync would blame Google if I could even get them to talk to me. I'm curious if anyone else yet has this phone and if they experience anything similar or if this is just a glitch that has to be there until they get it figured out.

that's a setting in Sync, it's not just the pixel...my LG G3 did it too.

Go into the sync settings and turn off messaging alerts

No messaging alerts is what alerts you to new messages. That's what i WANT it to do. I want to see/hear notifications for anything new. The problem is, the ones I am getting notified for are not new. They are the ones that have occurred since the last time Sync was powered on and it doesn't matter if they have been read or not.

As I said, I have had MANY phones in this truck and none of them worked this way for messaging notification. Google is perplexed as well and said it shouldn't work that way either but doesn't have an answer yet.

Hi TJPlatinumEB,

I hate to play the blame game, but if no other phone acts this way, it sounds like it's an issue with the phone. If you know someone else with SYNC, you can connect the phone to their system to see if you get the same results; preferably someone with the same system as you.

The phone is so new; we don't have much info on it just yet.

The question I have are there any Nexus users on here that are running Nougat and are they experiencing any issues. 7.0 has been out since March and I don't see it differing that much from 7.1 to cause issues.

it sounds like the messaging app isnt properly marking them as read. I turned the feature totally off because it was annoying as hell when i was listening to music, but if it were me id disable the internal messaging app (my pixel XL has some new "messenger" app on it, and just use another third party message app.

Sync is a horrible, hot, stinking garbage of a system, but this definitely sounds like the phone being weird.

Yes that is my suspicion too as far as the messages not being marked as read. Even though the stock Messaging app clearly has them marked as read. What is also weird is it won't start really pushing them through until I send a text or a new one actually is received. Then the faucet is opened and they come flooding in.

Google told me to boot in safe mode and run it that way for awhile, but that just eliminates 3rd party apps from being the issue. I don't have any on there that have anything to do with messaging.

I've always been a user of Textra so I'm going to try that for now and see if it works or makes any difference at all.

Not that this helps but...

My Note 7 does this is my 2017 patrol Explorer, which is really frustrating when trying to get on the radio. What is odd is it acts fine in my truck.

**UPDATE**

Installing a 3rd party texting app seems to have done the trick so far. I have only driven a total of 20-30 miles but received several messages in that time and sent a few as well. I tried to force it into situations where it would mess up before and it has not repeated any issues or errors that it was doing before.

Only time will tell, but it would appear on Android 7.0 and up, there is an issue with that stock messaging app and Sync.
