One of the issues (be it small, I understand) with the max tow mirrors is WIND noise on the highway.....especially with a head wind.
I don't know how much quieter the smaller mirrors might be, as I've never owned an F-150 without the bigger mirrors, but they ARE noisy on the highway.
I needed and wanted the max tow, and I don't mind the looks of the "dumbo" mirrors....and they are great when towing and extended for being able to actually see what's around you.

I've never noticed any excessive wind noise from my tow mirrors, but I've also not driven one without them for comparison. I have been wondering how much they contribute to my poor fuel mileage by catching more wind

Retired and loving it!
Fold them in for 20 miles or so and find out....been wanting to do that too!

Just got home from the dealership. I drove a Lariat Crew 5.0/3.55 and a F-250 SC 6.2/3.73 back to back. I realize the F-250 might have been a little heavier but driving them back to back, the 6.2 didn't feel that much faster. The 5.0 felt like it had to build steam a little more, a very linear power band. The 6.2 had more roar to it.
We built both up on the Ford Dealer's ordering software and the KR was about $290 more than it was built up on the Ford.com with the exact same options which was weird. The outright buy price ended up being the same so it boiled down to which engine I wanted essentially.
So, after much deliberating, I ended up placing my order for a fully loaded King Ranch 5.0/3.73!

6.2's are not consistent from my experience at all. If I went with the first truck I drove I would be telling you they are a gutless heap that isn't worth your time. Oddly enough both test drives I did were the exact same truck down to color and options differing only only in bed length. The first one was doggy, unresponsive and just flat out slow. The truck had around 2000 miles as well and was a demo of sorts. Mine now was brand new with nothing on the odometer and its a fun truck. With around 26 miles on the odometer I hooked my 2200 lb trailer on with another truck on it weighing around 7000 lbs and smoked the tires from a wide open throttle dead stop.... which with the rated power and a reasonable hitch weight is nothing crazy. Huge difference as this truck just flat out moves. Both were max tow 373 geared 6.2's.
A Super Duty will not be indicative of an F150 with a 6.2. I have driven plenty of those.... with again some better than others. I used to believe all were equal but over the many years of ownership of whatever vehicle you find a lot of inconsistencies.
I chose no dumbo tow mirrors. My trailers are open deck and I never have liked the wanna be trucker mirrors. I don't find them much more useful in my instances than my mirrors are. I also don't live towing a trailer either. Its personal preference really

Congratulations Spong, the truck is going to be a beauty. You will enjoy the 5.0. The Wifey bought a Mustang with the 5.0, and after driving the car I knew the 5.0 would be in my next truck. As a member here said it will "fart" along quiet as a mouse, and when you need it will roar to life. Post some pics when it arrives. BTW, the wait is a killer.
