From a detailers viewpoint, it depends on the color of your car, we use a pretty strong automotive degreaser most of the tar melts off. After that wash the truck, then go over the area with a clay bar, then you want to wax the area because the degreaser will have stripped the wax off

I use a microfiber cloth to wipe it off when I wash the truck. Should I be using something different on a white truck?

White trucks are the best to clean, are you using any product or just scrubbing?

Very, nothing should every be "scrubbed" off, you can get away with it 90% of the time on lighter colored vehicles but if you look closely (and know what you are looking for) you might see some scratches. And over time the truck will look dull.
