Thanks to everyone that contributed in this post and for Genos for getting this started. Once I browsed this thread I knew I had to try a build of my own.

I used a Nvidia Shield tablet K1 with the Metra kit. This is 8" and allowed me to purchase the controller so I can get in some gaming while the wife is in the store (or long red lights... joking...kinda). Installed a 128 Gig SD card for more space, mostly use my Plex server and sync music/movies/etc to my device since I have the room for it after the SD was installed. Some modification was needed to the kit, had to dremel out some areas to make it fit, as you can see in the pics. Pics explain the rest, nothing that was not already mentioned in this thread.

I did end of painting the kit after some areas were scuffed up and gorilla glue dried on it. I accidentally bought some Pearl clear coat and did not reliaze it until after I painted it but I like how it turned out, gave it a little something extra.

There are a couple things I am not happy with, mostly minor cosmetics that when I feel like taking out the dash again I can fix but I will enjoy it for awhile before I do that again.

Power is not as expected with 2.1 amp charger connected via fuse tap to #38 as mentioned in this threat, charges pretty slow while only listing to music but I am gaining, I was expecting to gain more I guess. I lose a few % through the day if I do more but I normally lose nothing overnight. I installed it at 50% and it dropped to 38% over the first 4 hours after install and playing with it. I put it on a power pack to get it back fully charged.

Used Tasker for automation as suggested in the thread, wife is a programmer, just told her what I needed and she set it up, she has that type of mind set.

Thanks again for the motivation. I am enjoying the hell out of it.

cmitchell - yeah your install looks great! I really wanted to use a shield k1 tablet but couldn't find any for sale and NVidia stopped making them... im jelly.

I also upload my "flow" for automate to the app community for anyone to download. I called it "Torque start and stop with car". The automate should work right out of the box except for downloading QuickPic and setting the one action to open the startup ford gif (or really any startup splashscreen you want)

Right now I'm trying to get the radio app that Gaa2008 posted to work. Its the one that mimics all the button you remove when you install the tablet. I cannot get that app to pair with my bluetooth device and I do not see anyway to configure it. Anyone out there get that app to work with their truck? (My bluetooth module is working great with torque.)

Hey Fourx4F150, how do I find the info that would allow me to open the startup ford gif, I have torque and all but I just can't get the ford splash to work. Thanks for any help.

never mind, I looked at the last page and I saw your info, i'll try to figure it out. Thank you for sharing!

I am pretty sure you have to us the MX style module that costs about 70 or 80 bucks. You can find them on Amazon.

I do have the ODBLink mx module. I dont think the module is the problem... I just have no idea how to configure the app and there are no buttons on the screen to access the settings where you would normally pick a bluetooth device (like you do in torque). Was hoping someone had first hand experience setting up and could share some insight.

Just finished my install and am pretty happy with the results.

Got a picture of pulling the radio (which ended up being totally unnecessary for my install and I just put it back), notice the proper use of an empty 12 pack of corona Pic of the back side of my tablet... I ended up just JB welding the tablet to the plastic. I tried using metal tape like another poster did, but it was just too flexible. This is totally solid.

The other pics are of different screens I have on the tablet... one of the home screen, one of the torque gauges (truck was off when i too this pic), one of the backup camera, and finally one of gps at night to give a sense of how it looks at night.

Really awesome stuff if you ask me and cannot thank all the other posters enough for giving the inspiration to try this project. My final electrical layout is: add a fuse to #38 passenger kick panel -> usb hub that takes 12v DC -> data out of the hub -> y cable -> tablet. Also into the y cable I have a cord from the USB hub power only port, so my hub provides both the power and data to my tablet. I have no problems charging while using GPS, gauges or anything else I throw at it, and the tablet only drains battery when the truck is off. Also, I still have 6 more data ports to plug whatever usb device I want into the tablet (thinking of adding a front camera in the future).

The backup camera I purchased is https://www.amazon.com/Backup-Camera...+backup+camera which I can say is a nice product for the price. I really wanted to do an emblem backup camera but they all cost more than this one.

The only thing left to do is to get that radio app working so I never need to hookup the old radio buttons.... anyone out there get that radio app to work?

The key to the backup camera is what's called an Easycap device. It converts composite video (yellow rca plug) to usb. The easycap is then plugged into the tablet. You do have to convert the usb to micro b to plug into tablet. For my specific setup I have the easycap plugged into my usb hub and then the usb hub is plugged into the tablet. A few posts back, I posted the link to the exact easycap I bought with some more details.
Hope it helps.
