Default Gas Mileage ???

I know this has probably already been hashed out but....

Last week I bought my 4x4 CC ecoboost. Im getting 16.8 mpg, and am really babying it. Only have 400 miles on it. Is this something that with your experience has improved or is that right for the truck?

My 4x4 SC 3.5 with 3.55 LS gets just over 16 mpg around town mixed with some short local runs. I've 2400+ miles now. Here's what I see. Unloaded on the highway with cruise control set 70mph=21mpg, 60mph=24mpg. And a little head wind will kill 2mpg easily. Put a canoe and a couple of sea kayaks on the roof and mileage drops to 17mpg+. Add a small utility trailer and it drops to 14.7mpg. Compared to the 5.3 in my gen three Z71 it returns about 20% better mpg for any driving condition. And has a huge amount more power available. Performance under load is surprisingly similar to a diesel, with turbos and direct injection guess I shouldn't have been so pleasantly surprised.

I've a lot of windshield time in most of the pickup diesels out there except the cummins. And in a lot of the larger gas engines including the 8.0 dodge V10. The 3.5 truck's power train and performance is amazing and exceeded my expectations even with the hype. I don't load or tow anywhere near the vehicles rating, if I did that routinely I'd buy a diesel.

Shortly after delivery I drove from California's Central Valley to the top of a Sierra Nevada Mountain pass. This is my report of that trip:
Took delivery of a 145" Supercrew 4x4 3.55 limited slip this week. Manual says to put on 1000 miles before towing so took a trip today. Mostly drove easy from Modesto, Ca. elevation 91', to the top of Sonora Pass elevation 9624', (a pass over the Sierra Nevada's), and back. From Kennedy Meadows to the top it is steep, (up to 26% grade).

Drove the truck 50-65 mph on straight sections of the trip. Remainder has curves, most requiring speeds of 35-45 mph, a few down to 20 mph. Filled up with 87 octane at same station/pump for departure & upon return.Truck had no weight in it other than me.

Total miles driven: Computer - 234, GPS - 239
Total ascent per GPS: 15,718'
Computer MPG indicated at the top of the pass: 17.6
Computer MPG complete trip: 21
Gallons consumed: Computer indicated - 10.5 (234/10.5=22mpg)
Gallons consumed: gas pump indicated - 10.257 (do the math with this!)

Saw no loss of power at altitude. Floored the truck on 26% upgrade at about 9200' elevation. Glad it has traction control, as thought the truck might slid sideways. Have never driven any pickup with that kind of throttle response at altitude. Guess the turbos were already spun up due to the grade and when I opened the throttle up it really came alive!

Used transmission range select on the way back down. Was surprised again at how much braking power this small displacement motor provided. Engine braking easily held the truck back about 2500-3500 rpm without the use of service brakes on all but the steepest portions. There light braking was applied to keep rpm below 4000, (in 1st gear).

So far this truck's performance has blown away the 5.3 liter Z71 it's replacing.
