First off, I’m glad you are okay. Hope you got checked out afterwards just to be safe.
i bet the crumpling of the bed saved a lot of the energy from being transferred to you. Head on you would have been much worse off.

I would have expected the damage to be much worse given the information of the incident.

So, his car looked like that and he ran off? That's pretty impressive, actually. I had owned mine for 28 days when I was rearended by an SUV. Mine was worse, totaled the truck just purchased for ~$35k. And he went to the hospital. But, my bed acted as shock absorber, too, I had no real injuries.

That was fantastic!
For the OP, if you haven't already, I would start getting looked at for whiplash. This is something that does not necessarily show up in the first few days following an accident. But after a few weeks or months you may start having issues with your neck or back.

That's a nasty hit, but it looks like the bed did what it was meant to do and took the brunt of the force. Hopefully they can track down the driver, with any luck maybe they have insurance, but ran off to avoid a breathalyzer.
If you have a loan and are covered with GAP insurance or have equity in it, I'd push for it to be totaled (if it isn't already.) They are never the same when they come back from an accident like that. I've had a handful of vehicles repaired, various shops used and the outcome is always the same; over spray everywhere, mismatched paint, aftermarket parts, misaligned gaps in the body parts...the list is long.

Yes.. I guess the way I look at it is this -- if I, by being a participant in his "path", avoided him from killing someone else in a smaller, perhaps, more vulnerable vehicle, then it was worth it. He was pinned in as there are 3 lanes of traffic each way -- he WAS going to hit someone -- badly.
