You are lucky mine is cracking and rusted after 1.5 years. Not leaking very much though so that's a decent point to make. Wouldn't buy another either.

Default Roll-X ordered, install, thoughts from 6-21-2014

Just wanted to post my experience on the Roll-X, especially since there are a lot of threads/posts on Bak and Roll-X, and my order/version/install is from just a few days ago.

Ordering experience:
After reading a number of threads on the Roll-X, I decided it was the best fit for me and went to the bak factory outlet site and worked with Morrie to place the order and discuss the best price. I can tell you it was a good price and lowest I found. Also was very easy process... a chat where he answered my questions, etc, and then basically placed the order and it was underway.

Received:
Shipping was fairly quick in my view... I believe it only took 4-5 business days(we were out of town) and arrived direct from Bak in good condition.

Install:
The instructions are terrible. Julian/Charly if you are reading, you guys could rewrite better instructions over a lunch break honestly. I followed others advice and hit up youtube for decent install instructions. I found that the major accessories dealers had pretty good videos. Now I will say do not freak out if some of your Roll-X does not match the video. Some of the videos are older, but the install concepts are still the same. I actually called Morrie during install thinking I had gotten some old version of the Roll-X, but turns out my Roll-X was the latest, and the video showed an older version. Minor differences really, but I just wanted to make sure I had the latest.

Maybe I am slow, but the install took me longer than it took others. In all fairness, I took my time, laid out everything, went back in to watch and rewatch install videos, etc. But the install took me well over 2 hours including a couple of beverage breaks. Maybe closer to 3 hours.

Quality Control (or the Need to Improve this):

As others mentioned, I was careful watching for (and expected) metal shavings when I unrolled the cover. Sure enough, there were many present - along the edges but also all over the cover too. This also added to my install time, but I unrolled it very slow and used my shop vac to remove all metal shavings as gently as possible so as not to scratch the vinyl or otherwise. Again, Julian and Charly, if you guys are reading - this needs to be addressed. Somehow you need to get those metal shavings taken care of. They can easily (and Im sure have caused many returns) scratch the cover or otherwise if you aren't super careful removing them first.

I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue, but I did discover a bent rail (more on the replacement later). The install still went okay, but in the end, there was a large gap on the passenger side near the cab. I knew this would lead to water getting in (and it did in my spray test).

Service:
I contacted both Morrie and Bak Customer / Warranty support on the bent rail issue. Here's where I was quite impressed. I sent the email / message to them on Sat 6-21-2014. The weekend. I received a reply from Morrie on Monday asking for pics and promising it would be dealt with. I sent pics quickly, and he immediately forwarded to Bak Warranty direct contact (who also happened to be the same contact at Bak that also wrote me back asking for pics prior to replacement of the rails). Within a couple hours, I received an acknowledgement that indeed the rail was bent, and a replacement would be sent. It is now Wed 6-25 and I already have a fedex tracking number for the replacement rail. I think that is very solid customer service from both Bak and Morrie.

Overall:
I like the Roll-X. If you can deal with some of the issues I've mentioned above (and some install issues like placement of the spring/bolts that folks have mentioned), I think it will be a great cover.

Hope this helps with anyone (like I was) reading and drowning in information in many of these posts. Whatever you decide - wish you the best.

Thanks.

I installed my Roll-X cover about 10 days ago. The first thing I noticed was that even with the seal installed across the front of the bed, I could still stick my finger out over the front bed rail. So, I removed the black shims that were factory installed on those plates attached to the side rails where the cover bolts down. This lowered the front of the bed cover so it at least somewhat contacts the front "seal". However, I noticed after removing the shims that now one of the front cross pieces sticks up because it's sitting on a rivet in the channel of the side rail.

I washed my truck the next day after installing and the bed was very wet inside. I can deal with some water leaking at the back side because it will just run down the tailgate. The water leaking at the front and possibly along the bed rails doesn't make me happy. I did email Bak about it right after filling out their online registration and have yet to get a response.

I've been busy and haven't had a chance to pursue it but after spending $800+ for a bed cover, I would like it to be more weather tight.

Was there a weather stripping piece that came with it?

I have a G2 but it can with a weather stripping piece that fills that gap and makes contact with the cover to seal. If not then lowes or Home Depot should have some and is an easy fix.

The piece they give you doesn't come anywhere close to filling the "hole."

Only issue I had when installing mine was the clamps for the rails, they kept popping up when I was tightening them and creating a gap, after fighting with a couple of them they finally seated properly making the entire assembly lay flush. It really helps if you have someone pushing down while you tighten those clamps. Seated they should look something like this.

Notice both sides of the clamp are inline with each other and not cocked up on either side, having the bedtred liner made my install a little harder due to the clearance but when finished the cover should lay flush with the bed side rails.

At the front of the bed it should lay flat as seen below and the only seal or gasket needed is the long ribbed one they supply, stick it length wise across the beds bulkhead, all of those other shims and seals are sitting in a junk drawer because they are not needed, not really sure why they included them.

yep, mine had the metal shavings. fortunately nothing was damaged other than a little nick out of the rubber seal at the side. it was too small to really worry me. i'm happy with mine but they really should deal with that issue regarding the shavings.

I was getting water in there as well. I put an additional piece of weatherstripping on top of the piece Bak supplied which filled the giant gap

I am suprised that BAK has not taken care of the metal shavings problem. I complained to them over a year ago about that same thing. This is a pretty easy fix...tell your people not ship with metal shavings on the product! Julian replaced my cover after i complained about some other things and I could not be happier now. My cover is about 99% watertight and looks good and does everything for me that I need. BAK customer service is second to none (at least when Julian is involved). I would buy again if I get another truck.

I have had nothing but problems with mine since I got it. I have the older version. Got it late 2012 and since day 1 my back would pop up and unlatch. I took it back and they resolved that issue but the cover has never been flush. Now it's just falling apart. I always lift the cover before closing tailgate and still the thing is just trash. Best yet I emailed the warranty division a week ago no response. I know I got it in 2012 even tho it was September but still almost two years and the thing is falling apart? Is that good for something so expensive? Should have hounded bak a long time ago thought I could live with the one side not being completely flush but now it's just an eye sore. Kicker is when I first got it I recommended the cover to a buddy,
He got his installed same place and his looks waaaay better then mine. Guess I got a lemon.
