Default Front shock dust cover

Went to the hills this weekend and took it pretty easy on the truck. After washing some of the mud off, I discovers a crack in the dust cover on the front passenger shock. I don't know anything about shocks, but don't think it's a big deal. Do these dust covers really do much? It's there for a reason, right?

I dont think it would be worth the time to remove everything to replace it. How about snaking a couple zip ties around it and cinching them down?
