Front axles stuck in 4wd while in 2wd, cant spin them by hand

Well I had truck jacked up with engine off and mine were engaged. And with engine on they were free. So not sure about the comment where they are always free

Lol, not, the way the vacuum works.
When motor is running, vacuum is applied and hubs are released, no vacuum hubs engaged.

Well good news...for me, anyway.
Yesterday we got **** on by mother nature and I had to run 4wd all day and today I was able to switch back to 2wd and the issue seems like it's resolved itself.
I can now turn off advanced traction control and I went from getting 10-11 mpg to 19-20 mpg. Granted, that was just from the drive to work and traffic's still kinda bad so I was driving slowly the whole way there, but before even after I reset the mpg tracking it would jump right back into the 10-11 range, so I knew right away something was different.
Hopefully that's the end of it and the hubs just needed the cob webs dusted off them after the truck sat at the dealer for a while. Kind of afraid to engage 4wd again, but thats half the point of a truck.
