Default Fraser Engine Sent Wrong Engine

Good morning all,

I have been running in circles trying to figure out what my options are. Here is a detailed run down of everything that has happened.

Early august 2021 I went to change my spark plugs and I dropped pieces of the plug in to the cylinder. Thought I got all of the pieces out however after installing all new plugs it started knocking. I towed the truck to the mechanic and purchased a low mileage rebuilt engine from Fraser Engines. Fraser sent the engine to my mechanic after about 2 weeks. The mechanic removed the old engine and swapped over sensors and all the items that are needed to swap over to the new engine. Installed the new engine in the truck, added fluids, new belts, new plugs etc. When he attempted to start the engine it just cranked and did not start. After some troubleshooting he found the pcm was not sending pcv voltage to the injectors. He contacted Fraser and they confirmed the engine was vin matched. He then contacted me and said the only thing it could be is the pcm board could have failed. He was very honest with me and said if the board doesn’t fix it he will assume costs of the board. He purchased a new pcm and had it programmed by a mobile programmer. Went to start the truck and it just cranked again, same symptoms. No codes present other then over amping of the battery occasionally because he would jump the battery to start the truck. I never rushed him as I have a company vehicle for work. Almost 3 months in to the repair he called and said he doesn’t want to keep wasting my time. I gave him 1,000 for new parts during the change out (passenger side turbo was leaking as well as the oil pump). He said to take it to the dealership and if it was something he did he would pay for the dealer to repair it and didn’t want any more money from me.

I then towed it to the dealership and it sat at the dealership for about a week. The warranty manager at Fraser engine then called me apologizing and stating they confirmed that they did in fact send me the wrong unit. He stated he would do everything to “make it right” and would pay the dealership to have the correct engine installed and the incorrect engine sent back to them. He even said he “would see what he could do” for reimbursement of what I paid my other mechanic. That was about a month and 5 phone calls ago from me to Fraser. Fraser said they would call Ford , I gave them the number and name to the service advisor assigned to my truck. To this day Dec 6, no one from Fraser has contacted ford. No engine has been sent to ford for them to replace it and the truck has sat there for about a month.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on what options I have or what my next step would be? I’m pretty lost at this point and the only thing I can think of is seeking legal advice and help on this matter but am reaching out to you all for some help, guidance and clarification.

First, I'm curious about what is "wrong" about the replacement engine. it seems to me that if it was the wrong engine, then your mechanic would have spotted that when he installed it and/or when he connected the myriad sensors and other electromechanical do-dads on it.

If it was the wrong engine then IMO Fraser owes you, your mechanic and the dealership for all of the added work and expense. But good luck collecting on that! If Fraser doesn't make it right voluntarily then your only course of action is to pay your mechanic and the dealership out of your own pocket and then sue Fraser for the added cost. That would be a good case for small claims court and IMO you almost certainly would win. However I suspect that Fraser may not have a legal presence (even an office?) in your state so small claims court might not be a possibility. And that would mean using a lawyer and filing in regular court which would mean that you would have to lay out more $$$$.

I suppose that if your mechanic ordered the engine, then you could try to hold him legally responsible for not making SURE that it was the correct engine before he installed it and incurred all of the unnecessary additional expense. A lot would depend on exactly what your arrangement with him was.

Not a lawyer and didn't sleep in a Holiday Inn last night.

It might help if you posted the year model of your truck and what engine. Also your state since state laws vary.

Hey all thanks for the response,

2013 F-150 Ecoboost , in Missouri.

The engine is the one generation newer than the 11-14 3.5 ecoboost. I’d be guessing but it is a 15 to 17 or 15 to 19 engine that was sent. Everything plugged as it should and bolted up like it was a direct replacement. Mechanic even called Fraser to confirm about 1 month or so in to the change out and Fraser stated that they vin match all engines before sending them out. Then later on confirmed they sent me the wrong unit.

i dont care how long it's been if you paid for the motor with a CC call and start a chargeback, that will get their attention

That’s the issue, they want to give me a refund that’s what they are pushing so they can get rid of the responsibility. I’d rather sit on it and them pay for the replacement but they aren’t moving at all

The OP didn't say if he bought the engine directly from Fraser or if his mechanic ordered it. Either way, this has been going on too long for a chargeback. That is limited to 60 days from the time that he received the bill from the CC company and the engine was bought in early August and someone would have gotten the CC bill before early September.

Besides, a chargeback would only get the OP his purchase price and Fraser has already offered that to him but he needs more due to the expenses that have been incurred.

Yes sorry I did not specify. I purchased the engine myself and had it sent to the mechanic.

There's no way it's a 17+. I have a feeling it's a 15-16. Any idea if the new motor came with crank sensor, reluctor/tone wheel attached?
