That would only apply to the software of one of the systems. Same as your PC or laptop.....read the the software fine print. Did you ever notice that you have to agree to the EUL (End User License)? Basically you are allowed to use it but you don't own it, you just own the actual computer.

Nothing new, just never enforced. It is the law, like it or not.

Outstanding comment.

Exactly!! If we look back to a few scifi movies, several come to mind, even the self driving vehicles allow the owner to take control manually.

Nothing to worry about, just dramatic bs amplified by media and the net is an easy way to target all.

We still have 100 y/o vehicles legally running the roads and I don't see anything changing any time soon.

The search for "diabolical" has been on ever since "1984" didn't quite come true.

"Amplified" is right. The whole TPP media-induced hysteria is ridiculous. No wonder the net is rife with jokes about black copters hovering.

How cool would a 100-year old F150 be? Would that lifetime Sirius still function? If a 2015, would the moonroof still leak?

I am not excited about how this trend tends to be going. Everything is designed for the greater good, but at what cost?

In 2018 all cars will have mandatory installed reverse cameras! Sounds great, so now I can continue to sip my Starbucks coffee and watch the little digital screen to see if there is a problem. However, I have no peripheral vision to see if the neighbor kid on his bike coming down the sidewalk sees me or not. What was so wrong with turning your head and looking behind the vehicle? (I understand in our trucks it is hard to see anything under 4' off the ground, but leave it up to me if I want to have the camera installed or not. Even without a camera I have somehow managed to hook up to my trailer multiple times, and as of yet, have not run over the neighbors children *knock on wood*)

It was before my time that seatbelts became mandatory in our state. However what difference does it make to you, if we have a crash and I fly through my windshield. Leave the decision of my personal safety to me, and I will leave the decision of your personal safety to you. We raise insurance rates on smokers, why not make a box to check on your car insurance for seat belt use or not. Same goes for wearing a helmet on my motorcycle. I choose to wear a helmet cause I am rather attached to my head. However I do not feel my decision should be mandatory for everyone.

We have almost completely eliminated survival of the fittest and Darwinism with warning labels and safety precautions. If I want to do something stupid with my truck and roll it. I paid for it, I made the decision to be dumb, I should pay the consequences. Just cause I am a dumb *******, doesn't mean we need to install advance track and stability control in every vehicle. This does nothing but raise the cost of production.

End rant.....

This "new story" isn't exactly new news.

It's been bandied about in one form or another since OBD II came into existence. There have been routine fights between the SAE, the manufacturers, et.al. over who "owns" the software.

Someone saw a slow news day and revived the story for clickbait, which is routine for Yahoo "news" items.

I didn't go through and read all the posts here, so it may have been mentioned.

If anybody wants to see what America looks like in the near future, there are 2 movies that have it pretty well figured out.

1. Demolition Man
2. Idiocracy
