Ford Techs and DIYers - oil change surprise!
 

Had my oil changed at my local dealership after work one day last week. They have a Quicklane on property and I've been having them change my oil and rotate the tires. Brought the truck home after it was done and when I went back outside after about 30 minutes, found a big puddle of oil under the truck. Crawled underneath the truck and saw this:

Thought I was pretty lucky it hadn't fallen completely out. I grabbed my tools, unbuttoned the protective plate and tightened the bolt. Buttoned her back up and checked the oil. It was down almost a quart. I had an quart in the garage that I dumped in and the dipstick read just below the top mark after a minute or two.

So I paid $50 for an oil change and tire rotation and still had to crawl under the truck in my work clothes and get all dirty and oily.

Took the truck and this picture in the next day to show them. They were very surprised and also very apologetic. Had a nice chat with the manager. I specifically asked them not to fire the kid, but make it a "learning event" for him instead. Everybody makes mistakes. Glad this one wasn't more serious.

I always do it myself. I had a similar experience many years ago but the outcome was worse. :censored:

You handled the situation well. Most guys would want this poor kids head on a stick. I'm certain he learned from it.

Very lucky catch. Glad you saw the oil. I will usually use the first oil change for free from my dealer but I always change my own after that. I would like to know what they would have said if the engine let loose from no oil. That might have gotten ugly.


Also good for you on making it a learning experience! We all make mistakes.

Had the same thing happen on a sedan, but I couldn't see under it to notice the puddle. Wife called me later in the day and said there was a big pool of oil on the garage floor where my car was. I was 180 miles from home. Made it to a local quick-service place and they tightened the drain plug and topped off the oil.

The dealer as apologetic and gave me a free oil change. Mistakes happen and life goes on.

Geez. Thanks for reinforcing my life decision to always do it myself.

Ok, I find this funny and ironic (not bashing you Sock). "Ok, we messed up but here, let us try again". Not sure I would want to go back. I am sure you always check your plug now though.

Reminds me of my college days when I worked at Walmart in the tire and lube express. Couldn't really call it a shop, more like a destruction derby. Oil plugs left out, wheels falling off on the road, hubcaps and center caps falling off, drain and no refill oil changes, etc.

same thing happened to me a few years ago, except that I didnt realize it soon enough... cost me a lot, lot more than 5 minutes under the car and a trip back to the dealer.
