Issue: Ford Remote Access app review

The Ford Remote Access app is available for both IPhone and Android users to control vehicle features. The app lets you remote start, remote stop, lock, unlock, audible car find, and there is even an optional feature to receive security notifications.

  • What, if any, are the costs associated?
  • Do you have to go to the dealer?
  • What hardware is compatible?
  • How well does it work compared with aftermarket devices?
  • What models are compatible?

Just thought I'd share something interesting . . . So I sold my RMU and VSS to another member here on the forum. He received it yesterday and told me he was going to install it. A little while later I started getting texts and emails saying my security sensor was triggered on my truck (which I no longer have). I sent a text to him saying that his alarm is working and we chuckled. We then decided that I should try and remote start his truck . . . and of course it worked!

I was also able to transfer my account online to him and now he is benefiting from the subscription I had already paid for and which was going to waste since they won't give refunds. I had assumed that the unit was married to the VIN but this is obviously not the case . . . once the unit is setup in Ford's system it seems to work regardless of which truck it's in.

Is he able to change the original pin code to his own? This should secure his own account.

I have a Verizon cell phone account that works through a second party cell phone system (roaming). None of the remote apps work very well under those circumstances. I thought I was going to be able to use the remote apps but it proved to be a worthless cause.

I am not sure that PIN is used for anything but the initial setup. I was asked for it when I created the account online but never again. And there is no facility to change the PIN on the website.

They do offer a transfer service which we used. He created his own account, then I selected my "vehicle" to transfer to his new account. I received an email back asking for verification which I did, then I created a PIN for him to transfer the "vehicle". He accepted the "vehicle" from me and put in the PIN I gave him. It was super easy. Now its completely gone from my account and its in his.

Can confirm - was the buying member. Worked out perfectly. Was slightly amusing to see my truck started from 2500km away while we were transferring the account.

I never had to change the PIN. When Kibosh transferred his 'truck' (i.e. the VMU/RSS) through the Remote Access website, I accepted with my account, which effectively 'locked out' the previous owner. I called 1-800-FORDKEY the next day to confirm the PIN and the VIN didn't matter from there on in - I just had to enter my billing information for when the renewal comes up in May.

Question for Benny or anyone else who may know. I'm at the dealer and they've set everything up on their computer. Everything works except actually starting the truck (lock, unlock, find vehicle works). Any reason this is happening? They can't figure it out. Thanks!

Was the IDS flash done? This needs to be done aside from the RMU activation

I know it's not F150 related BUT related to the subject matter. My wife has a 2015 platinum Escape with every option known to man. She has the auto start from the fob but the range kind of sucks so I thought the Remote Access would be a way to go. From doing a search on other forums it seems there is no love for Escape owners and being able to use the Ford Remote Access app for some reason. Could someone at a dealership confirm this?

This is correct there is no cellular kit available for that vehicle. Since you have a range issue my recommendation would be the long range bi-directional kit which works up to 1000ft. If you are interested send me a PM and I will provide more details.

Thanks. It was the IDS flash that wasn't completed. After he did that it worked like a champ. Got my DRLs (Amber) turned on also.
