Issue: Ford Remote Access app review

The Ford Remote Access app is available for both IPhone and Android users to control vehicle features. The app lets you remote start, remote stop, lock, unlock, audible car find, and there is even an optional feature to receive security notifications.

Read to find out more:
  • What, if any, are the costs associated?
  • Do you have to go to the dealer?
  • What hardware is compatible?
  • How well does it work compared with aftermarket devices?
  • What models are compatible?

I've had dealers tell me I needed a whole new remote start unit, others say it needs the remote start and the security kit (though it already has the built-in, default security system). Hopefully someone here who's been through this can help.

I have a 2014 Ford Explorer Limited (equipment group 300A, no other options). It already includes the remote start, all I want to do is add the Remote Access (smartphone) feature.

Reading through the install docs, it appears that all I would need to do is order/install/activate the RMU (DL3Z-19A390-B). The site for ordering the RMU says that security kit 19A361 is also required, but in reading the install documentation, it appears that this is optional, as there's a jumper that gets relocated if this item is/is not installed.

So, can someone confirm if the RMU is the only thing needed?

Thanks for any help!
You will 100% need the security kit. I went through this with my 14 edge and my buddy's 14 F150

Damn! Of course, it appears that this item's SRP is $200, but the dealer is quoting me $400 (before installation). Exactly why I don't trust what they've been telling me.

Ok, thank you.

So can you confirm that the installation of both kits is truly just plug and play? No splicing or anything?

Thanks again.

You don't have to do the LED's unless you want to.

Completely plug and play, and a couple zip ties

How is the app running for those of you in the great white north? Since it has turned COLD this week, my remote access is very buggy. Most of the time it does not work, unless the truck is already warm. Yesterday it kept giving me communication errors, but when I went out to the truck it had clearly been running (temp was up, seat was warm etc). If this thing won't operate reliably below -20C, I'm going to pull it out and sell it.

I have had trouble twice in the last week. Once I couldn't get it at all, another it started but gave the communication error. The time it didn't start it barely cranked over even with the key. So that may have been the problem with that.

My sister got the drone put in her vehicle a month ago. She is on her 2nd module. So makes me feel better about my issues.

I suppose nothing is guaranteed, but I sure wish it worked reliably when it's cold.

Yea you should really use the block heater when it's 10 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, especially below 0. It may still start if you don't but it won't like it and it's not good for your motor.
