Ford F150 vs Subaru Forester. Anyone switch?

Find a gently used 12+ lariat or higher trim with the AWD transfer case and rear E-locker and go anywhere you please on snowy winter roads or up the boat ramp. That's the one thing I wish all trim level F150 had was the automatic 4x4 transfer case like Chevy has (that's the only thing though). You can drive all winter in 4A and go more places than any Subaru, plus the crew cab is cavernous. Tip up the rear seats and you get a flat load floor that's big enough to haul a dresser or two. Put a cap or tonneau cover on the back and haul all your gear safely and out of the elements, and keep the dirty bikes and shoes out of the cabin. Yes, gas mileage suffers but it's a hell of a trade off. I drive a little Kia Rio to work to save on gas and accumulated miles on the truck and get 30mpg all day long and that little beater is great in the snow. Driving them both, my two vehicle average is 22.5mpg,bot bad considering what I'm getting. You can pick up a cheap commuter for 5k or less and drive it till the wheels fall off, and use your truck for fun duty on the weekends.

This isn't a Forester but my wife has a 12 Impreza that we are having a boatload of problems with. It has 12k on it and the rings have been replaced twice. We are in the process of working with Subaru, the dealer and Lemon Law to get out of this. The reason I point this out is if you look online at different forums you will find that this new engine, the 2.0 has oil consumption issues. If you are going to go the Forester route I would strongly suggest making sure it has the 2.5. Also the tires are a big issue and after this winter I'll be looking for something that is better suited for snow.

I think she wants an Outback once we get rid of this car, I would prefer she get an Escape as I don't have a lot of faith in Subaru after this mess but it is up to her. I'm just the one that has to take it to the shop and wait for it.

What difference does it make how much it costs to fill it up. They have vastly different sized fuel tanks. Based on that logic we should all buy the car with the smallest fuel tank.

My wife had a Forester for about 4 years. It was a good LITTLE car. It was great in the snow. Hard to get it stuck if you were in snow - on the road. I would not call it an off road vehicle. Ours liked to eat tires too with that AWD.

If you want to do any off-roading, you will want the F-150. The Subaru is a great grocery getter if there is 5 inches of snow on the ground and you need to get a gallon of milk. If you want to take off across the ditch and through the field to load up this year's deer kill, well then, that's a different kind of grocery gettin, isnt it....

Stated fuel range for the Forester is 461 miles, vs 756 miles for the F150 Ecoboost. How is that even remotely close.

Do you have anything to contribute to this thread and his question?

I have a forester. I know how great it is on gas.
I don't have an ecoboost but from reading this forum I don't think people are getting the "stated" range.
From all the feedback I've read.. my 5.0 is comparable to eco real world.
I can tell you from experience that we fill up about the same mileage in our vehicles. I have twice the tank of the forester.
I've seen you on other threads doing the same thing, contributing nothing and making smart *** remarks. You, sir, are a douche bag.

We also have both in our garage. I have the F150 and my wife drives an Outback. She loves her Subaru. It obviously gets better mileage and handles the snow as well or better than my truck.

But when it comes time for the family to go anywhere we all pile into the F150. And I am sure that if she could figure out how she would swipe the keys and trade me vehicles. It just isn't going to happen on my watch. I don't like driving the Subaru. I don't like the visibility. I don't like the driving position. I don't like the lack of acceleration out of the little four cylinder compared to the V8 in my F150.

Like others have said you are comparing apples to oranges. Get what you want and are comfortable driving. If you are worried about MPG stay away from the F150 - because you will just be another of those disappointed Ecoboost whiners complaining that you aren't getting the MPG that you were promised. The F150 is not ever going to get the MPG of a smaller vehicle no matter how much the salesman tells you about the greatness of the Ecoboost. If you want clearance and off road capabilities then get yourself a Jeep with a 6+ inch lift kit and a good set of off road tires that will outmaneuver any pickup. If you want to be able to haul anything you can fit in the bed and tow a decent sized trailer then get a F150.

I have an 2012 F150, my GF has a 2012 Forester with the 2.5 liter NA engine. The subaru is great in the snow, and a super nice vehicle overall, Has just about every option available. Right now we are having a problem with oil usage, it uses 0w-20 Full Synthetic oil, and it's burning a quart every 1000 miles. We have a few more trips to the dealer for the oil consumption test, then they will be tearing into it. Her last 2 subaru's never burnt a drop of oil

athough this thread is entertaining,,and neat to see how many of us actually own Subaru's...wife's car of course..Its not even fair to compare a F150 to any Subaru..2 different vehicles meant for 2 different buyers..I will just say wife's Forester gets 28 mpg's city and I got 16 on my EB. Both drive the same streets. Her tank is 16 gallon and my EB had a 36 gallon..Guess which one cost less to operate..

Another Subaru and F150 owner here.

I had a 2002 WRX wagon, replaced it with my current 2007 Legacy GT wagon. Both turbo cars.

Truck is a 2013 5.0l FX4 Extended cab.

For winter city driving, I love the Subarus. They go very confidently. Lots of room around them too for when the streets get narrow with snow banks. I commute with the Subaru and parking in underground parking where it fits nicely.

The truck is my big box store, weekend vehicle for going to the cottage, etc. I took it to work one day and hit the antenna many many times on the low ceiling (pipes, etc.), couldn't make the exit without backing up and re-positioning. Roads were narrow. Just not convenient.

Gas wise, the Turbo 2.5 in my Subaru runs premium gas so it costs more per litre. Subaru's aren't great on milage, they are AWD after all. On the highway, the Subaru uses less gas but cost wise, it's pretty much a wash. City driving the Subaru would have a 10-20% advantage. I think the new Foresters are CVT so they likely do better that my automatic.

I have the two vehicles for my own use because they are very different vehicles. Sure, there's overlap but look at their differences and decide which you want.
