Fixes for the downshift clunk and hard shift
#11
I had a reflash done a few months ago. It helped...
My truck is a Screw 5.5box. 1 pc aluminum drive shaft.
I removed the driveshaft, cleaned it really good with brake clean, lots of black sticky crap in there. I run my fingers along the splines on the driveshaft... felt a few rough spots.
Using a small file I filed between each spline just a bit and cleaned it out REALLY good with brake clean.
Dunked the spline end of the driveshaft in ATF and reinstalled.
Drain the transfer case and refill with a good ATF.
Clunk has been 100% gone since!! and it was driving me nuts!
The harsh shift is "normal" to me now, but the stop start clunk was awful, sometimes feeling like the truck was rearended.
Good luck

Thanks s_vares. I'll take this to my dealer and see what they say. As long as it's under warranty, I'll have them do the work.
Anyone else that has any fixes or TSBs, please let me know. Thanks.

The same thing happens to me (2010 5.4L). I have heard that basically this is really common but is an electric/computer generated problem nothing with the condition of your gears and tranny. I have known people to go to Ford multiple times and they say "it's fine" or it never stops. I think it's just bad engineering for this particular element of the 5.4L. I have heard the 5.0 they made from 2012+ is much better.

Would these be the TSB related to the 1st to 2nd Hard shift?

I have a 2013 f150. I got it about a month ago. I having problems with down shifting. I was driving down the freeway at 65mph and the truck shifted from 6th gear to 3rd gear. It was pretty scary. Has anyone with this problem had it fix? And what was the problem?

I'd contact Ford. Also log into your Ford Owner account and see if they started including the transmission sensor recall for your year or truck. Currently there is a recall for the 2011-2012.

The problem you are describing sounds like reason for the recall. There is no remedy yet (software wise,) but they can scan the truck and check for codes and when the software is out you can get your PCM flashed.

I have a 2012 SCREW 4x4, and I have both the downshift clunk when coming to a stop and the hard shift from 1st to 2nd. The downshift clunk almost feels like it pushes the truck forward when I've almost stopped, and the display will show it going from 3rd to 1st gear.
The hard shift from 1st to 2nd is worse when the tranny is cold, and gets better once it warms up. But, going to the grocery store or the gas station, the thing never warms up in time and jerks me around.
I have had it to one dealer, who reflashed it, and seemed to fix the problem for about 100 miles, and then it did the same things again. I took it back, and they told me that the hard shift and the clunk were "normal". I took it to another dealer, who felt all the problems, and said no, that is definitely not normal, and replaced some lead carrier/bracket thing in the tranny. the hard shift is a little better, but still noticible (even to passengers riding in my truck), and the downshift clunk is still there.
Before I bring this back to the dealer, has anyone found any solutions to these problems or found any dealer fixes. I have 10,000 miles on te truck right now, and have a Suburban with 90,000 that shifts better....
thanks in advance.

Bought 2014 SCAB 5.0 with only 8,500 miles in March. Just now noticing the bump when coming to a stop. The thing I noticed is that it will not do this when in Tow/Haul mode?

The clunk when stopping/starting is because Ford didn’t lube the drive shaft spline (end toward tranny) at factory. They say to pull it out and lube it with stuff you can get at dealership. Might be able to use regular ht grease or atf I’m not sure though.
the harsh shift is due to bad firmware in tcm. There is a recall for this but you know how some of the Ford dealership mechanics are. They will hold your truck for a week and say could t find anything wrong when all they need to do is flash new firmware to tcm, and clear out the tranny adaptive learning tables. Also good idea to go ahead and do misfire correction procedure as well as cam position sensor reset procedure while they have it hooked up.
