Default A Fix for my poor Ecoboost Fuel Economy.

Sold the truck.

Driving a 2006 Chev Duramax now, no performance mods, just one size over 265/75/16 tires.

The 300km trip home from Calgary Alberta where I purchased the used Chevy confirmed my purchase was the right move.

Filled both trucks up in Airdrie and drove 300km to home. Filled both trucks up once again when we arrived home.

The trucks followed each other in what would be considered "easy" freeway driving. Alberta's busiest highway, you have to be doing 120km/hr (74mph) or you will be run over! Not this trip, it had snowed, so with icy roads we probably averaged 105 km/hr (65mph).

As fair a test as you will get, unless you can point out something I forgot?

The fillup after 300km (186 miles)

2011 Ford F150 Crew Ecoboost took 51 liters (13.47 US gallons) = 17L/100km or 13.83 mpg.

2006 Chev 2500HD Crew Duramax took 39 liters (10.30 US gallons) = 13L/100km or 18.09 mpg.

Case closed.

You got me there! Fill-ups were $50.49 for the gas jobber and $42.90 for the diesel.

Diesel is admittedly more money right now, about 10% more than gasoline. It usually peaks in January with winter heating oil demands. Come summer it will be 10% less, so it equals out at the end of the year.

Glad you are happy now. I am working hard to get rid of my Ecoboost as well. It simply does not live up to the hype in my opinion....... I'll probably end up with a Raptor. if I am going to dive a truck that does not get good gas milage, I might as well love it.......

2 Threads? Really? I priced the two fill ups with the difference of diesel vs. gas and it shows it is only about a $3.90 difference over 300 miles.

One truck looks not so good and one looks awesome. One is old one is new under warranty.

Oh and by the way at 65mph I would be getting about 21mpg so I find that hard to believe.

I didn't appreciate being a**-raped by FORD Ecoboost any longer.

I am sure some of you are having good experiences with your Ecoboost, or some that are just too proud to admit it is not as good as we were all led to believe it would be.

I have had 3 new F150's and a new F250 within the last 5 years. Two 5.4L, one 6.2L, and lastly the 3.5 EB. The tried and true 5.4L was by far the best of the group. The two new engines were huge disappointments.

I made a personal decision to go back to a pre-emission diesel.

I loved my 06 lbz. I'd get 19mpg all the time. Loads of power. Always seemed to have more power than f450 6.4. Towed up hill better too. Sadly I was struck with re occurring rotted fuel lines and leaky trans cooler lines and it was out of warranty, so I needed to move on. Haven't owned a diesel that was near as well running or as reliable as it since. Rip to my 06 dmax

Hrm...
You bought a truck with a completely different engine technology (and a totally different cost structure)... and you're trying to draw comparisons?

That just doesn't make a lot of sense. Diesels get better MPG, hands down, no questions asked, and they tend to last longer than gassers. It's also more per liter, FAR more up front to buy a diesel engine, FAR more to maintain a diesel engine, and FAR more to repair a diesel engine. If you're only comparing one of those variables, you're not speaking truth and are simply fooling yourself.

I have a VERY strong feeling that saving $7.59 on the way back from cowtown is NOT going to get you ahead when you have to spend a couple grand re-doing injectors on that duramax (pretty common on those trucks, and you're starting to hit the age where it happens).

I mean, make the choice you're happy with, but let's not pretend that gas mileage is the only cost involved here. Also.... I'm a little curious how you managed to romp on the turbo's enough to get 17l/100km empty on a straight, flat highway? I just did the Edmonchuck>Ctown race @ around 118km/hr a couple weeks ago and averaged 12.2 in my 4x4 3.73 SCrew. You must have really been spooling the turbo's up and down or something?

Anyway, I really don't think a 5 year old diesel with extremely high average maintenance costs is going to net you anything in the end, but congrats on the new truck and hopefully you're happy with it.
