I don't buy a truck to worry about mileage.

Have fun on the Colorado forum.

Good luck, hope it works out how you want it to!

I have a buddy that drives a Tacomah that is rated higher mpg than my truck, yet I always get better mileage than he does. And I have more power and is more spacious inside and out. Also faster than his is Smaller does not always equal better/faster/more mpg.

I’m just waiting on the new 2019 ranger. My current truck only has 20.5k miles, and is in better than perfect condition, but it has several things I dislike more each day. 1. It’s too damn high off the ground. 2. It feels like I’m steering a yacht when I try to park in the average parking space. 3. Sync 2 - nuff said. 4. Lifetime mpg avg of 13.5. 5. Back doors only open half way. It was the best thing available for the money when I bought it, heck, I even spent 40k on an attached garage big enough to park it in. Tech, however has past it by.

LOL! Don't hate on it too hard. Those colorados actually have a decent payload capacity, better than some F150's.

They get really butt hurt when you tell them that the diesel barely saves them on gas with today's gas prices. National average for 87 octane is $2.454, diesel is $2.835. They also get really butthurt when you tell them HP tows trailers, not torque.

That aside, I considered a Colorado Dmax as well and test drove two and the V6/8 speed version. They are a nice truck for sure. It was the only mid-sized that I could fit my sons car seat into without having to adjust the front seats forward or upright and both the dmax and V6 had a decent low end to scoot around town. No Ecoboost or V8, but decent.

The dmax is a newer version of the motor I have in my liberty CRD and I can say that after towing a 4500 lb Mastercraft wakeboard boat in NH with that, I would be very hesistant to tow my 5500 lb travel trailer here in the Rockies with the Dmax. Just not enough HP to get up the hills without really slowing down. It will do great on the flats and moderate hills, but over a couple % grade and its gunna be sweating.

Ford is either going to tank on the Ranger and only bring out a truck that is just barely enough to compete with the competition, or they are going to absolutely blow everyone out of the water by following in the F150 footsteps, going aluminum, throwing a 2.3 or 2.7 Ecoboost+10 speed and getting high 20's on the MPG's while offering better performance.

I really hope its the later.

Larger doesn't necessarily equal better either. My Frontier got exactly the same mileage as my F150, and while it was slower it sure handled a TON better on curvy backroads and was actually fun to drive. The bed was large enough to haul full sheets of plywood/drywall that let me finish my basement as well as haul the firewood to heat my home the past 11 years. The only reason I don't have another is I have 3 kids to haul around, 2 of which will be in carseats.

I think it's a shame so many people think the need 1/2 tons to commute back and forth to work, the midsized market could be so much better if the OEM's focused more on those trucks.

It is worse than that, if you go onto the towing forums some people will try to convince you that you need an F350 dually to tow a utility trailer, lol.

As far as midsize trucks, considering the fuel economy is basically the same and they cost about the same as a 1/2 ton, IMHO the bigger truck is the better buy.

I tried not to open myself up to more criticism but yeah, I know a lot of people that drive 3/4 and 1 ton trucks when they don't even own a trailer and don't haul anything other than a 4 wheeler.

I guess the value thing depends on what you want to do. I prefer a smaller more nimble truck for backroads and parking lots (and just the ability to fit the truck in my garage and be able to walk behind it). Not to mention the F150 is way too large to fit on trails I used to offroad on. 3 Rangers and a Frontier always provided more than enough capability for my weekend warrior activities.

Hilarious watching people complain about other people for owning the same vehicle they themselves own. Guess you guys are all "real" truck owners.
