I think it will depend how well the Ram 1500 and new 2.7l ecoboost does. If the mpg and performance of the 2.7l is within the ram's, then there is no reason for a diesel.

Yeah, but I don't think the 2.7 will come close to the 420 ft-lbs of the ram diesel. Ram is probably hoping the diesel will top the 3.5 eco. I just don't see them selling very many. We'll just have to wait and see.

Which leads me to think that we won't see a power jump for the 3.5 eco. It already has more than enough power IMO. More likely that they have been updating it to increase efficiency.

420 ft lbs, 8 speed trans, and "28" mpg hwy.

That sounds good to me... Not gonna lie I love my Ford but come 2016 I'll be looking at a ram

Looks like Nissan has got everyone beat... "but the source claims the new V8 produces a maximum of 275 hp and a massive 560 lb-ft of torque." Would be interesting to see what the MPG claims are.

The article I previously linked talks about Ford using a 10 speed transmission. But 2018? That's a long way out.

If the Ram sells really well, we could see a response by the other two. I've seen reports that toyota/nissan will do the cummins 5L.

So the next couple of years will be a great time to be a truck buyer

Ford: Lighter with small displacement boosted engines
Chevy: Large mills with variable displacement engines
Dodge, Nissian, Toyota: Diesel

what i am looking for is a 500,000 mile motor in a half ton...will be hard pressed with a gas burner...i know the 250 and 350s can easy get that, and i know that it cost a little more to operate them, but in the long run it will cost less, if i figure it right with the cost of having to get a new truck at about 200,000 miles...who knows, maybe i am looking at it wrong, i guess only time will tell...

I think what whistles13 was getting at was the 2.7l getting the MPG that the Ram diesel does for those looking for the MPG benefits. There are those folks that only see 28 MPG (or what ever it is suppose to be) and not the added cost of the motor, fuel and maintenance. Dodge will be able to tout that they can "Pull like/better than the EcoBoost and get mileage like/better than the 2.7l or the 3.5l Ford. The ability to advertise this will sell trucks across the motor spectrum for Dodge because there are a lot of consumers that simply believe what they read in ads and see on commercials.

Yea people believe marketing that isn't even claimed but is implied by the use of buzzwords. Look at all the people thinking the Ecoboost is going to get 3 mpg better than the 5.0. At best it is rated 1 mpg better. Yet they are disappointed it isn't meeting expectations.

So you are saying its similar to how they tout best fuel economy now, even though that's with 2wd pentastar v6 when most people would rather have the 4wd hemi. With the diesel they could have multiple categories of bragging rights even though many people won't want a diesel or be willing to pay more for it. It will make for good advertising and bring people into the dealerships.
