Default F-150 Automatics - are these things flipping confused???

2011 F-150 ecoboost with 6-speed auto.

What. Is. Going. On. Here.

I don't recall ever getting this annoyed before, but now it bugs me every time I drive my truck. I have about 20K miles. This transmission is driving me nuts to the point I'm ready to sell this thing.

-5 to 4 downshifts, for no good reason, and often times clunks.
-3 to 1 downshifts while slowing but not quit stopping, clunks.
-4th gear manual mode, almost any gear you can do it, but 4th seems most noticeable. VERY light throttle off and on you feel something clunking.
-I'm convinced the torque converter on this thing has a mind of its own. I'm looking at the shift display and I feel what seems to be a shift but no gear change. It's not smooth at all, a grimlin is under my truck hitting the driveline with a giant hammer... I feel everything, not smooth at all. It's the H of Noise, vibration, harshness.

They made this trans for fuel economy, and I'm sure it's doing something to save on fuel, but this drive-ability is literally driving me nuts. I'm sure this trans is confused, stupid, and can't get out of its own way.

I'm hoping someone can chime in here. I've brought it in and they say they can't find anything. I'm not dreaming.

You might be feeling the converter locking and unlocking. May be the speed sensor as well.

Yep get use to it, it's called a 6 speed transmission.

My wifes Escape 4WD 2.5L does it with it's 6 speed auto. I had a 2013 Chrysler town and Country Minivan rental and it does it with it's 6 speed auto.

Can't you just wait for Dodges 8 and 9 speed transmissions and Ford's upcoming 10 speed transmission slated for their 2015 F150's !

My 2010 works flawlessly but i live on flat land and drive aggressively, 55k on it. They say it learns from your driving style, if more than 8k on it maybe you could get it reset and try again, i don't know much about it though, maybe ask your dealer. Possible torque converter, possible driveline spline slack, some say lubing it fixes the clunk.

5 Star Tuning will end the annoying transmission habits.
Some of the clunk may be from the splines on the drive shaft needing lubrication.

Apparently this was not an issue during most of the 20k miles? If so, something changed and therefore is not normal?

Default all that clunking

Sounds more like the driveshaft/yolk problem. Id take it in and have it looked at

Have had the dealer do any PCM updates? Try disconnecting the battery for a while to see if the trans can get rid of the bad habits.

If your looking to add a tuner, 5star has been known to cure bad shifting.

Also, take a look under the truck to make sure your not losing fluid.

Say hello to an environmentally conscious software program for your transmission. My guess is you're seeing the computer attempting to conserve fuel somehow. I don't think it is any truly mechanical issue.

The problem is that there should be a selectable program depending on what kind of geography you're in. I live in the Allegheny mountains of Pennsylvania. There are a ton of peaks and valleys, and this tranny seems to pick all of the worst times to upshift/downshift. You know it's bad when you can manually make the truck get better fuel economy than the cruise control.
