from a hardware store, its explained somewhere in this thread but I forget exactly where. But basically what you do is use 2 or 3 extra washers and do exactly the opposite of what the directions say, I forget what the directions say but i think you want to use the washers then the cylinder then the tailgate strap, it eliminates all problems with binding. Its somewhere in the middle of this thread, there are pictures and videos of it so you should be able to find it easily.

This is exactly correct and then there is no need for the foam piece with heat shrink on the cable..I used the flat washer than came with the kit and two additional fender washers to give me just enough clearance so the cylinder does not rub against the inside of the truck near the tail light..Surprised DeeZee hasn't picked up on this

Got my new version today from the eBay seller others suggested (arianatc). Super easy install (I did add some locktite to lower stud to be safe) and works great.

Has a slight thud when opening unassisted but not bad at all. Love it and highly recommended. Nice not worrying about my boys dropping the tailgate on their heads.

Got the old version from oreilly and installed it. I used the extra washer method. Did not use the heat shrink or foam. The tie wrap was better used to secure the clip and hold it in place.

It works perfectly! However, when screwing in the tailgaite mount...I heard a snap and rattle. So I think of of the tabs snapped off inside. But its holding for now.

Anyone ever order a spare part? If I could, I would get another original tailgate bolt, or hybrid this old style with a new style tailgate mount.

Its OK and holding but I can't help to think its days are numbered and the other tab will snap.

I seriously doubt you snapped off one of the tabs. On mine after tightening all the way, it was still loose. I think this is why a lot of people's work loose, it is still loose after being tightened all the way. I took mine back off and backed the tab nut all the way off past the little shot of glue keeper on the end. Then I clamped it in vise grips and ground the square side of the nut down to make it thinner. Put it back on and this time it tightened completely and is very solid. The square part of the nut is thicker than our tailgates!!
However, after trying it both ways and a lot of rebending trying to keep the rubber on the tailgate cable from being cut by anything, I finally gave up and will try to manufacture a newer style upper for mine so that it fastens under the tailgate support cable like the newer version does. I believe they have done this just for this reason of the rubber on the cable ends getting cut when shutting the tailgate. This is a very good idea that was marketed before being completely engineered. jmo

I must of ate my Wheaties when I installed mine. I broke off both tabs of the insert so I drilled a hole just above the slot where the insert went and screwed the allen screw in and it works fine.
