Exploding rear window
This whole thing is absolutely ridiculous. Ford should be issuing a recall on this as this MOST definitely a safety issue! Smoke, fire and shattered glass and kids in the back seat. How is this not recall material?
I guess they'd rather deal with individual law suits instead of the cost of recalling.
I pulled the fuse for my rear defrost and will keep it like that until there is some resolution to this issue. In the meantime, I can't use the defrost, but I don't want to risk the damage to my truck or injury to my passengers.

This thread "cracks me up". Haha.
The level of hysteria over this surprises me. A handful of people got defective glass, and now everyone is rushing out to disable their defroster. This is not new technology, in fact heated rear window defrosters have been around longer than many of us. A few instances of broken glass in a couple million trucks does not constitute something to get worried about.
The rear window is tempered glass because it's safer than regular glass. Meaning that it does not break into jagged shards that cut people like normal glass will. It the rear window breaks it will most likely **** off whomever happens to be under it instead of harming them. If I were worried about this I would be driving around with the defroster on ALL the time to incite the window to break while under warranty.

Lol, can you imagine how mad that person in the back would be? Haha! I bet it will be hilarious to see how mad a one year old in a rear facing child seat can get. Imagine when the parents have no idea what's going on and never heard of the problem before? The sound similar to a gunshot and then seeing glass on their kid is surely going to be hilarious. Likely anecdotal, but still.
It's good you have all the time in the world to play the "is my dealer going to help today" game. The PITA of leaving your vehicle there for a day. Then knowing the cause was not actually fixed, knowing it may happen again on the way home. Many, it seems, were not covered under the warranty, even when they should have been. Surely nothing to be concerned about when deciding on using this decades old feature.
I have to say, I hope yours does go. Then after the repair have it go again. Just be sure to come back and read you own post, before getting hysterical.
Hysteria?
This is not hysteria. This is not wanting to deal with a BS issue. I had mine go. It's inconvenient. I have it off because it's my business, my time, my headache. When it's yours, you deal with it as happy go lucky as you want. But don't tell me I'm hysterical. If someone out of warranty turns it off so they don't have to pay a grand or more to fix a known issue, that is smart thinking. Not hysteria.Anyway, thanks for your input. I'm sure it will be considered essential when people are deciding how to react to all of this.

Some have reported the truck catching on fire because of this problem. Would you like to see this happen with kids in the back seat? Would you find that funny?
Ford is aware of the bad design since they have changed it in recent trucks. They made a change to the wiring from what I've read.
It's a known issue with certain model years and since fire can result, it should be a recall.
Definitely not something to laugh about.

Huh, very interesting. One of these cases the window shattered after the small fire started, but the other one didn't break the window. Did anyone who had this happen experience any sort of smoke or smell before or after? I'm curious to know whether or not these are related.
Still not unplugging my defroster though.
