Exploding rear window
That is exactly the thing though. My 2mo old (at the time) son was under my window when it exploded. Thankfully it stayed in one piece and didnt rain down on him, but what if it hadn't? Most people, if they have children, have their children ride on the pass side of the vehicle...which is the side that is known to break. It is not just a quality issue, it is a safety issue.
Posting my experience in this thread too for anyone else's future reference.
On Christmas Eve I as driving down the highway. It was raining and I had the defrosters on as the windows were fogging. All of a sudden I hear a loud bang like a rock hit the roof. I get home and check everywhere for a dent. Nothing.
Next morning I realized that the glass was cracked.
This is on a 2010 Lariat SuperCrew with 43K miles. The vehicle is in immaculate condition.
We were going out of town on Christmas day and we were going to take the truck, but I didn't want to risk the glass falling out so we took another vehicle.
While out of town I call my dealer. The head of the service department was familiar with the issue but said coverage was hit and miss and since I was out of the B2B, it would be a crapshoot, even though I have the PremiumCare warranty.
Note: If you read the coverage on the PremiumCare warranty it says that the defroster is covered but it specifically states glass breakage isn't.
Dropped off the truck this morning. The Service Writer who caught me when I drove in (not the head of service) acknowledged that it's a known issue. They were going to have to send in pictures to Ford to get a decision.
Early afternoon the service writer calls and says that it's not covered under the Premium Care Extended warranty but they filed a claim with Ford for consideration. He wasn't sure when they would get a verdict so I should come pick up the vehicle. Ten minutes later he calls me back and said that he had good news. They were going to cover the repair and all I had to pay was the $100 deductible. They were going to try and get the glass ordered and there was even a possibility I could get it back tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
Kudos to Ford and the dealer for stepping up.
Pictures of the damage. You can see on the trim picture where it heated up/shorted out and the glass cracks expand away from there.

Got my window replaced today. The guy was here just over an hour. He did say that he had to do some rewiring to make it work. He also said that last winter, he was averaging one a week and has already done a handful this year. He thought Ford covered most of those. I told him that I talked to my dealer (who said this was the first one they had ever seen) and sent Ford an email and neither offered anything. Oh well, at least its fixed. Just have to wait and see if my insurance rate goes up for filing the claim.
