I'm sure I'll find it but what fuse is it in an 11 so I too can still have mirror defrost. Also has any tried to disconnect that portion of the defrost and left the middle and drivers side working. At least some would be better than none.
Yes thats what i did - Just disconnect the wire to the element & tape it off -

The level of hysteria over this surprises me. A handful of people got defective glass, and now everyone is rushing out to disable their defroster. This is not new technology, in fact heated rear window defrosters have been around longer than many of us. A few instances of broken glass in a couple million trucks does not constitute something to get worried about.

The rear window is tempered glass because it's safer than regular glass. Meaning that it does not break into jagged shards that cut people like normal glass will. It the rear window breaks it will most likely **** off whomever happens to be under it instead of harming them. If I were worried about this I would be driving around with the defroster on ALL the time to incite the window to break while under warranty.
I understand your point but here is the flaw in it. Lets just talk about 2010's. The info I can find online says that 313,393 F150s were sold in the US that year. Now we know not all are optioned with a rear defrost so to be conservative lets says 50% are(I bet in reality more like 30% are). Thats about 156,696. And lets say about a 1/3 of those are in the southern states that the owner never needs to use the rear defrost thus never experience a blow out. So that leaves roughly 104,464 that may use the defrost. Now of those how many are parked in a garage and or once again the owner chooses to never use the defrost. My supercab gets parked in my garage. Lets say 50%. So now we have about 52,232 that possibly use the defrost on a regular basis. That is still a large number of trucks but how many have had issues and it doesnt get reported on this forum or anywhere else. Even if 1%(522) have issues, which I would bet is pretty close if not lower than actual, that is still high when you go back to our original potential of trucks equipped with a defrost.

This is clearly an obvious defect and its obvious Ford is trying their hardest to sweep it under the rug. Very disappointing.

what Ford should do is 1. offer a total recall on all of them and be done with it. or 2. extend the warranty to 10 year 100k or something similar. Maybe at least pay for parts and the owner pays labor.

Just acting like they dont know about it is total BS!

yep. Im sure being in Texas you know all too well about that. up here in Ok I need a good AC in the summer and will for sure "want" to use the rear defrost this winter. Seems like Most winters the snow and Ice happens when Im at work parked outside.

If it gets too hot this next summer Ill just drive home one of our GM service trucks. They will throw snow out the vents if you let it.

I had it happen to me, with platinum extended warranty. Crystal was able to reach out to my Ford dealer, and despite being denied two times for the fix under warranty, on the third they caved. Refused to acknowledge it is a problem, but fixed it none the less for free.

Use another truck in bad weather and havnt needed it - only disconnect it to eliminate the aggravation ( not interested in finding out if window is in the "minority")

So does anyone know what the real issue is? Is it poor glass is it the heater gets too hot? what is it?

A good consumer reporter would love a story like this.

Annoying as it is that you spend $40,000 on a truck and you have to disconnect wires in fear of the glass breaking, I'd rather do that than deal with another broken rear window. Especially with the kids riding back there.
Currently have a claim in with insurance company(progressive). They are having safelite do it as they said the dealer was too exspensive.
