Agree that the glass should not break just because you use the defroster.
This has not been mentioned for a while but if you slightly open the rear window, the defroster circuit to the window will be opened and so it will get no heat. The mirrors will still get heat. It may be a way to prevent the rear window from breaking due to defroster use.

I don't know about that theory that Feathermerchant just wrote above.
A section of mine broke today while driving home from work. Had 22 miles to drive in the snow but it was not that cold outside and I only had the rear defrost on when we first left work and headed out. Defroster times out after about 10 minutes so it was off for about 30 minutes and then the drivers side panel pops and cracks. I even had the rear window open a wee bit so I could push more air through the cab to defrost the windshield better.. When I first heard it, I thought a tree branch hit the top of the roof. But the noise sounded a little bit different than some object hitting the truck.
The driver rear panel is shattered between the outer and inner glass panels. Definitely around the heating element wires and the panel is still intact. Guess I'll be calling my insurance company tomorrow along with paying the deductible..

My rear defrost button stopped working just like it did before it broke the last time and I am worried that it will break again. When it was replaced the manager told me every part has a 2 year warranty so I hope I am in that time period.

Add me to this list!
I have a 2012 XLT and was sitting at a stoplight this morning when I heard a loud pop. Looked around the truck and saw that my right rear window was completely spidered. It was about 20 degrees outside and the rear defrost had been on for about 10 minutes. I have an extended warranty on the truck but of course it does not cover the glass. They want $900 up front before they will even order the part.

Glass insurance?

My insurance covers broken glass, but I have a $500 deductible. I spoke with a different service department employee and they have taken pictures of the window to try and get a warranty approval. I should know more on Monday.
