I tried this today (disconnect wire from grid) on my 2012 FX4 w/Luxury pkg Supercrew,(built 11/08/11) I then pressed the rear defrost button (that activates heated side mirrors as well) with it disconnected at rear window to determine if they still worked and nothing , no amber light on switch, pressed the (rec) recirculate button also and nothing no amber light on switch . Slipped the metal connecter back onto the rear defrost grid and all works well . I had my entire pwr sliding defrost rear window replaced in fall 2012 due to delamination of the black paint around the frame, so by virtue I had a newer window to begin with being a 2012 opposed to 2010, and then a newer yet window that I have now from 9/2012 when it was ordered from Ford and put in. I just turned it off within the remote start and will keep an eye on it and use it sparingly I guess.

This thread "cracks me up". Haha.
The level of hysteria over this surprises me. A handful of people got defective glass, and now everyone is rushing out to disable their defroster. This is not new technology, in fact heated rear window defrosters have been around longer than many of us. A few instances of broken glass in a couple million trucks does not constitute something to get worried about.
The rear window is tempered glass because it's safer than regular glass. Meaning that it does not break into jagged shards that cut people like normal glass will. It the rear window breaks it will most likely **** off whomever happens to be under it instead of harming them. If I were worried about this I would be driving around with the defroster on ALL the time to incite the window to break while under warranty.

For all the hypocrites that lurk these pages and judge the submissions and legitimate concerns of enthusiasts, I do hope you will one day learn to appreciate the efforts of others and feel a greater need to contribute rather than scrutinize.

No matter how basic or in depth the question may be, the vast majority of us will take the time to share our knowledge or experience to help a fellow enthusiast. I stand by my assertion that it's ridiculous to unplug your defroster out of fear for this issue. With over a million trucks of this generation on the road the failure numbers don't seem great enough to get worked up over. I'd be frustrated if it happened to me, but the solution is to fix the issue not disable the defroster. And the lack of repeat failures suggests to me that the issue was fixed with the replacement glass. I'm still following this thread to learn more about the issue. To call me a hypocrite seems ridiculous to me, and it seems ironic that I'm the one being called judgmental.

Just pop fuse #32 out of the junction box in the engine bay. It powers up the rear defrost grid only. The heated mirrors still work because they are on a different fuse.
Keep in mind this info is for my 2010 truck. I'm not sure if the newer ones have different fuse numbers for it. Just check your manual. The fuse is labeled as "Heated backlite" and is 40A.
