Here's some additional information for everyone having this problem with tempered glazing. You can throw this term out there as well and will likely raise the eyebrows of your dealership.

It's very likely the spontaneous breakage is the result of a sulfide inclusion in the glass. This type of breakage in tempered glazing, when subjected to heat, is the result of a nickel sulfide particle in the glass. This happens from impurities during the glass manufacturing process.

No other type of glass manufactured has this type of spontaneous breakage other than tempered glass. The reason is tempered glass is sent through a high heat and relative quick cooling process, which locks in high stress to the manufactured glass sheet. The heating process is what provides the higher glass strength and is the final process used in the manufacture of tempered glass.

This also happens in buildings that use tempered glass on hot days. Up to 5% of glass can experience the condition, which is why architects on buildings with large amounts of tempered glass specify a process call heat soaking. That process subjects the glass to 500-degrees in an oven and causes the glass to break if has a sulfide inclusion.

Readin about the glass experiencing a spider like pattern is the direct clue of a sulfide inclusion. The breakage pattern always points directly to where the sulfide inclusion exists and the only way to see the inclusion is under high powered photo enlargement - kind of like a microscope.

If you haven't guessed, I'm an architect and that's why I'm positive that is what's causing the spontaneous breakage noted along with the description of the pattern.

Was this only in 2010? Or layer years to? I just bought a 2012 and the right side spidered. It came from a central location so I figured some dumb kid with bb gun or something shot it. I have remote start though and it is set to auto rear defrost and j had used remote start before I got it in when I noticed it was cracked. Live in a good neighborhood so thought it was strange and hadn't made anyone mad either.

It can happen to ANY privacy glass.

My 2011 right side back window cracked (slider in the middle). It was a cold snowy morning. I started the truck, and turned on the rear defroster. Cleaned off the truck and my wife's car. In a few minutes I got in and backed-up. I heard a pop. It took me a while to figure out what happened, but sure enough, it was the back window. The dealer warrantied it. I will never use the back defroster again.

Just had it happen on mine right now...2 hours before I'm supposed to leave ice fishing. Not too happy.

Drove fine this morning to work. Parked at work for an hour max and hit the automatic start twice to warm it up before leaving. Went and hopped in to leave and it was shatterered. Luckily it was still holding together so I have it taped up.

-12 here this morning. First words out of dealers mouth was extreme cold. I said extreme!? Its -12...parts of northern MN were -33 this morning air temp...trucks are driving all around up there without windows shattering.

Guess we'll see what happens. And yes this is the part where the defrost connects, passenger side rear.

Default Mine Too!

2010 FX4 S Crew Power Sliding Rear w/ defrost.

I had the exact same thing happen with mine this past weekend...not impressed at all.
Off to the dealer I go on Monday morning to likely get bent over the counter with no lube to have this repaired...wish me luck!
Will post pictures and outcome....(not bent over though)

Same thing happened to my freaking SHOWER DOOR a few months ago.
The wife and I were down stairs one evening when we heard what sounded like an M-80 going off upstairs.
The master bathroom is pretty-big in this house, thus it's where my 100lbs Lab sleeps(he has his own bed) at night.
Just a few hours later and he would've been showered with the glass.

So if I'm looking into buying a truck...2012 screw. Should I be ok if it has a one piece rear window? Is this problem just with the sliding windows cause it seems that way from people's posts.
