Engine Swap Question
I like the 5.0 a lot. I am thinking of about a 10k budget either way when it comes down to it. Of course this will be a done over time thing I am in no rush. My truck just went over 40k miles and I picked it up 5 years ago. I appreciate all the feedback on this the hardest part is going to be pulling the trigger and getting started.
Honestly if you are wanting to upgrade your truck, the 6 speed from the newer trucks will open up all sorts of power even with the 4.6. Not sure if they will bolt up, but the 4.6/5.4 and the newer motors should be the same modular family. You should look into that as well.
I diddent know they were still making the 2v in trucks. But to answer your question and 5.4 2v engine will bolt right up. All the accessories will fit etc. You will obivious need exhaust of some sort, intake and induction, then a custom tune to help it run correctly. It should be a pretty straight forward swap. Now you could also swap a 4v 4.6 or 5.4 in and it would be a really easy swap also. Besides needing to modify the harness due to the location of the coils, everything will bolt right up and work. I have done many 2v to 4v swaps in mustangs, pretty easy swap if you are moderately mechanically inclined. As mentioned with any swap expect to need a custom tune done. Regardless of the engines mentioned above your factory ecm will work just fine and will keep all you gauges and buttons working as intended.

I believe I am one of the last years that they put the 4.6l 2v into the trucks. They also offered the 4.6l 3v in the 2010's. As for tuning and everything else I did go ahead and buy one of the very few tuners that work with my motor and it just so happens to be the same one that can be used on sooooo many motors. Gives me the ability to change gears and everything. If dropping a 5.4l 3v from the same year will bolt right up I can at least get started. An engine out of a wrecked truck isn't too hard to find. Computer was more or less my biggest concern.
As for mechanical experience I am an aircraft mechanic take it as you choose.

A 3v will not work. It has variable cam timing which will be controlled by the computer. You can lock the cams out and eliminate the vct, but I would stick with either a 2v of 4v engine. Sounds like you can handle the swap, I would go for it but keep in mind it wont be a weekend swap.
http://shraderperformance.com/2011/10/charles-stroker/You want a 5.0 2v. Get a motor setup like this with or without the supercharger
