I like the 5.0 a lot. I am thinking of about a 10k budget either way when it comes down to it. Of course this will be a done over time thing I am in no rush. My truck just went over 40k miles and I picked it up 5 years ago. I appreciate all the feedback on this the hardest part is going to be pulling the trigger and getting started.

Honestly if you are wanting to upgrade your truck, the 6 speed from the newer trucks will open up all sorts of power even with the 4.6. Not sure if they will bolt up, but the 4.6/5.4 and the newer motors should be the same modular family. You should look into that as well.

I diddent know they were still making the 2v in trucks. But to answer your question and 5.4 2v engine will bolt right up. All the accessories will fit etc. You will obivious need exhaust of some sort, intake and induction, then a custom tune to help it run correctly. It should be a pretty straight forward swap. Now you could also swap a 4v 4.6 or 5.4 in and it would be a really easy swap also. Besides needing to modify the harness due to the location of the coils, everything will bolt right up and work. I have done many 2v to 4v swaps in mustangs, pretty easy swap if you are moderately mechanically inclined. As mentioned with any swap expect to need a custom tune done. Regardless of the engines mentioned above your factory ecm will work just fine and will keep all you gauges and buttons working as intended.

No sense in trying to mate these two up. Computers going to have a heck of a time with shift points. Do the 5.0 or alluminator. I agree you will be able to get a low priced 5.0 tranny cpu and trans from a wrecked truck. Might be worth it to just buy one from a wrecking yard ship it to your house and go to work swapping parts. If you find one with a bent frame you can probably get quite a few pieces out of it. Better yet if you find a high trim one you can go to town on the interior stuff.

I believe I am one of the last years that they put the 4.6l 2v into the trucks. They also offered the 4.6l 3v in the 2010's. As for tuning and everything else I did go ahead and buy one of the very few tuners that work with my motor and it just so happens to be the same one that can be used on sooooo many motors. Gives me the ability to change gears and everything. If dropping a 5.4l 3v from the same year will bolt right up I can at least get started. An engine out of a wrecked truck isn't too hard to find. Computer was more or less my biggest concern.

As for mechanical experience I am an aircraft mechanic take it as you choose.

Hey I've got the same truck, seems like a fun project, what's the goal with this gonna be, meaning are you gonna put a stock engine and trans and leave it alone, or are you going for big power?

I would like to build it after I swap. The 4.6 runs just fine does everything I could ask of it. I just want more, I want to make it a beast in the end.

A 3v will not work. It has variable cam timing which will be controlled by the computer. You can lock the cams out and eliminate the vct, but I would stick with either a 2v of 4v engine. Sounds like you can handle the swap, I would go for it but keep in mind it wont be a weekend swap.
