Engine increasing in RPM while coasting to a stop
2010 Screw, 2wd, 5.4, 3.55:1 LS
Problem: when I enter my neighborhood after work each day (after a 30 mile interstate drive) and descend a hill towards a stop sign at the bottom, as I brake to stop the engine revs up to as much as 1500 RPM, requirng extra braking effort. It's very predicable and you can watch the tach rev up and then back down a bit before settling finally around 550 rpm. The hill is steep enough where once started my foot is off the gas. Hill is ~10 houses worth long and I'm only going 25-30 mph. I'm not sure if the tranny is trying to downshift during this time or what's going on. Does pressing the brake pedal prompt this condition, or is it relative to braking and speed?
I had Ford address the abnormal 1-2 shift and the tranny clunk issue awhile back. It was a noticable improvement at the time, but this problem has shown up since. The 1-2 shift issue is getting worse too. It seems to be worse when the engine is good and hot. Drivability stinks between 1st and 2nd and when coming to a complete stop - otherwise it's great.
Anyone else notice this?
Thanks,
Robert

ive got a '10 screw lariat with the 5.4 and 3.55's just like you. i do not have the 1-2 shift problem but to answer your question. when coasting to a stop, the truck does downshift automatically and the revs bump up when that happens to help bring the truck to a stop.
are you sure the trucks not just engine braking? i dont have a 6 speed auto mines the 4 so i can't speak to the particulars of the 6 speed. but i do know its supposed to be capable of downshifting and engine braking.
I thought it only does that if the tow/haul button is pushed. On my wifes Escape if you turn the OD off and hit the brake once while descending the car will hold that speed. Its actually kinda nice on big hills.
You are in TOW/HAUL mode. It is for when you are towing something or even hauling something of substantial weight, you turn that on and it will gear you down for more power and not allow you to hit your high gears to harm your tranny. When you are slowing tap your breaks and it will downshift to assist you in slowing, so you do not have to fully rely on your break pads. It's kind of like a jake break but it's not stalling your engine.
Make sure to turn off your Tow/Haul button, especially if you are doing highway driving. It's probably killing your gas mileage. It's the little silver button next to your gear selector (if you have a console). If not it will be at the end tip of your gear selector.

With the tow/haul engaged, when you press the brakes 2 times, it will start engine (compression) braking to assist while going down hill. It works perfectly by the way.
I wonder if the truck is sensing tha tyou are going downhill (there is a level sensor mounted in the middle of the truck that is also used for roll-over). What's the manual say??
