Default Ecoboost: What does a oil catch can do and do I need it?

I've read about an oil catch can in the Explorer forums and now here. What is a oil catch can and would I need it?

There are already several threads on here about this. Most have been locked out. It's just like everything else you can add to your vehicle for personal preference.

Some people swear by them and other swear they are self induced prophecies. The science behind them is basically a filter system for your PCV system. It removes contaminates from the returning air to your intake. They started out on race applications then made their way to the "civilian aftermarket". Since no 2 engines are identical (no matter what anybody tells you), there might be a need for a system like a catch can to help keep your engine cleaner. For most, it's not needed.

You will get a lot of very personal opinions one way or another. There are some people on here that sell them. Don't get drawn into the pissing match with other members one way or another. Check the search feature to read through some of the threads.

Me? No. I'm just curious if it actually works.

If I do decided to get one. Do I have to cut any hoses to install it? Will the 15 dollar ebay ones work just as well?

Where does the blow by valve expel the gases back into the intake? Before the turbo or after the turbo? If it is before the turbo, I'd be worried about all the gunk that would end up on the turbo.

Do you NEED it? Absolutley NOT. Nobody should say so.

Would it benefit your engine over time and if so how much? Thats the question that gets debated like an oil thread....

My ignorant opinion...If you trade within 100k miles - NOPE no benefit. If you keep your truck a million miles - good chance of a potential benefit. Anywhere in the middle....???? I do not have one and fall into the first bucket.

Having said that, it is a good question. I reckon I'd use one. Maybe.

Put "catch can" in the search. Then look for our good friend Wayne under username "Z7What". He has some good post about the catch cans.

Myself I can't see it being worth the money.
