Default Ecoboost thermostat location

Does anyone wanna tell me where the thermostat is located? And if you have changed yours how much coolant did you lose in the process? Thanks!

Now...before you do this DO NOT mix coolant colors...I went and bought some from ford. You lose about a gallon. I caught nearly all of it in a clean drop pan but it got a bunch of dust in it from running down the engine and the frame so I didn't want to reuse it.

Take the intake out...lid over the filter with the three clips, undo the wire to the sensor and take the two clamps off after the Y going to the turbos to give you room. The thermostat is in line with the radiator hose on the driver side...right where it goes into the engine. There are two bolts, I think 8mm or 5/16 socket (same thing) when you open it go slow (and take the radiator cap off) so you don't make a mess because its got some pressure. I caught all that in a big drink cup, then the thermostat is in the hole...there is a bunch of coolant behind it held in the heads. There is a o-ring in there...my new one came with a different style o-ring that goes on the lip of the new thermostat, just put the old one with the old thermostat in case you ever want to switch it back. Put it all back together, fill up the coolant bottle and start the truck with the heater on full blast and just let it idle until it warms up. When the fans cut on, on the radiator its at 210 degrees..heater should be hot...then check to see if the bottle is still full. I think i had to rev it up a little to 2500 or so and hold it bc it idled for 15 minutes with the fans off...thermostat was doing enough to keep it below 190. Run it good but keep checking the bottle for a couple days to be sure.

To get the use out of the thermostat you need your tuner to change the fan settings to work at the lower temp, mine are 175 on, 170ish off. Running it hard I've seen it bump 190 at the track and cools right off.

just curious how many miles you have on your truck, 2 years seems quick to replace the thermostat and or coolant. Then again I have a take home ride and dont put alot of miles on my personal vehicle...

The topic is actually about changing the thermostat to a lower temperature unit. It's not going to affect much in daily driving but if you run at the track much it will help you be more consistent as the temp of the engine is a little more stable. Stock the thermostat is a 188F unit, changing to a 170F unit.

So i changed my thermostat out with a 170 degree one. I went to ford to buy the correct coolant and the parts guy gave me gold colour. I later found out that the truck uses orange in colour and have already mixed the two together. Should i drain and flush my coolant out or is it fine being ford coolant? Truck is a 2011 ecoboost.

when you go to Ford to get coolant, get the parts guy to print you out a diagram of the thermostat.. I lost about a gallon of coolant and it took me about thirty minutes to install it
