Default Ecoboost running rich?

Just bought a 2013 XLT SCREW, and I've noticed when I start it to warm it up in the morning, the exhaust smells strongly of gasoline while its idling. Its most noticeable immediately after starting it. Anyone else notice this, and is it normal? This, coupled with lower gas mileage than I expected has me wondering. I only have about 1400 miles on it, but I'm averaging only about 13 mpg. I'm sure the freezing temps here in the Detroit area aren't helping, either.

Mine does the same thing, a few times i have seen black smoke. I think its due to the direct injection. Im averaging about 15-16 right now but im hardly ever in the boost and live out in the country.

I have seen both with mine.

I have ecoboost since their release in the F150 and the mileage tanks in the winter. Average 14.5 now when I normally get 17 average back and forth between home and work.

Can't speak about exhaust smelling like gasoline but expect a significant drop in MPG from winter blend gas.

It's from the DI, worse in the winter and it's noticeably worse if you leave it idling for long periods of time.

Short trips also dilute the oil with gas as the truck doesn't get up to normal temps to evaporate it...but yes it is normal.

While the black smoke and soot are more prominent in the EB and DI engines altogether, most vehicles do this on the first start. The vehicle is in "open loop" on a cold start. The O2 sensors are not warm enough to give a correct reading so without knowing exactly how the engine is running, the ECM dumps a preprogrammed amount of fuel ( usually rich for easier starts and smoother cold idle). The vehicle will also stay at a higher idle to aid warming the O2s and cats up.

OP- I have done a lot of reading on the 13 EB as I have one and my mileage blows. I think ford has either detuned or retuned the 13's and that has something to do with the mileage being a lot worse than the previous 2 years models. Call me crazy but if you google it you will see what I am talking about.
