Default Dealer needed to add Electric Brake Controller???

I have a FX4 with tow package. The only thing it did not come with was the electric brake controller, surprising but. I was thinking of adding the factor ford controller but I heard when you do if you had not had it before...you have to take it to the dealer to program it. Is this true??

Is that the case if you had an aftermarket brake controller? im guessing its only to end up adding the gain portion of the controller to the software that you see on your dash when adjust the controller?

if this is the case I will just ad an aftermarket controller. looking for clarification. Thank you all. I do plan to plug into the factor harness with an adapter cable that many sell/have.

Thank you all.

again not sure why id didnt come with...but I checked the detail to make sure it had the tow package as I have a 2 trailer with electric brake...

2012 FX4 Tuxedo Black.

Yes, it's true, and often discussed on the forum.

You'll find that people that have used the Ford controller and aftermarket controllers strongly prefer the Ford one. Again, lots of posts on it.

I just went through this. Get the oem one. You can order the part from tasca and put it in yourself. You will just have to go to the dealer for them to turn it on in the computer. All the dealers told me it would be $90 but my dealer only charged 47 cause it took them half an hour.

Love the OEM controller. It interfaces with the dash readout and that simple design that sits in the dash looks much better than an aftermarket unit hanging off a gimble bracket.
Got mine cheap on electronicbay, and the dealer activated it for $10. Service description was "misc electrical" on my bill.

Ditto, although my dealer charged 90$. Still the only way to go.

You can also program and store many different trailer settings in the cluster screen if you need to tow multiple trailers.

I hate the stealership....have a decent one around here...but ok so the OEM seems to work better for people so I guess it sounds worth it for the more $$ ford one vs aftermarket that is in my current 2002 XLT F-150.

OK going to go for that.

Thanks all

I added the factory controler to my truck as well. 1) Its a clean factory look and no splicing or wiring needed. 2) I believe the truck will automatically control trailer brakes when something starts going out of control.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I had to

Check with the quick lane shops that are by the dealer. Some have IDS and can activate it. May find one to do it FREE. I got lucky at one with my remote start.
