i did the same thing. after reading many many threads about this subject. i changed to stock dry air filter (well.. WiX version anyways) ... might just be my mind playing tricks... but it seems to run better/smoother... imo.

K&N has never failed me.
I've used K&N drop in filters for over 13 years and several trucks. And I have seen threads with issues but has anyone contacted K&N about these?

There have been w-a-y too many issues over the years with K&Ns. None the least of which being that Jim Conforti (of BMW racing chip fame) had flow bench tests done in a lab in Connecticut pitting many different air filters against each other. The factory stock paper filter not only was shown to filter better than K&N, but it also flowed more efficiently. The final straw was when I talked with Jim, he said "take the K&N filter out and hold it up to a light source (like the sun) and tell me what you see. What did I see? HOLES! Holes the size larger than grains of sand!!! Jim said "yep". K&N's reply to this? "Well, there are micro fibers that you can't see filtering in those holes". (which of course would explain why there was grit in my filter housing - on the WRONG side of the filter!)
Needless to say, I went out and removed the K&Ns from every vehicle I owned and shipped them to K&N (here in Northern California) and told them "thanks, but no thanks".
Never heard a word back from them.
*If* I did get a non-OEM filter, it would be an AirAid I believe.
There are so many really cool things to do to a vehicle without jeopardizing its longevity or reliability by spending $50+ on a junk air filter.

I agree. I was shocked when I first held up a k&n to a light. It's more of a screen than a filter. There have been some compelling tests done that have proven their filtering isn't adequate.
I switched to amsoil due to the micron rating and filtering efficiency.
