Lightbulb DRL and HID Upgrade

I've check everywhere, and can't seem to find an answer to my question.

I just bought a 2012 XLT that was originally a Canadian truck. It has the daytime running lights that run the headlights at a lower voltage. I want to upgrade the headlights. Will bi-xenon HIDs work on my truck? How do they handle the low voltage situation when the lights are off and the drls are on?

If they can't handle it, is it easy to disable the drl feature?

Are there any other options that can handle the low voltage of the drl system without damaging them?

Any help is appreciated. I've searched the forums and couldn't find what I wanted.

Thanks,
Mark

Being as your are installing a set of HIDs and using a aftermarket harness you wont have to worry about messing up the HIDs. The harness pulls full power from the battery. The factory harness will only be used to trigger the relay.

The real answer to that lies in whether you have the Halogen housings or the HID Projector housing headlights.

You can't legally run HID's in a Halogen housing, and even though many people do disregarding the law, they're ignorant and putting other people's lives at risk for their vanity. So be sure you have projector housings BEFORE you consider HID's or the light scatter could put someone in a ditch.

If it helps, you can always go to your dealer and have them turn off the drl option unless your state requires it.

Wayne is also correct, but I've seen instances where the drl signal chatters the trigger line, and the hid will flicker because of it.

That's what's holding me back from upgrading too (even to oem projectors) as I've had them flicker in other vehicles even with a relay harness when the low voltage drl signal is the trigger.

Drl signal on 13-14 trucks can be sent to the signal lights but for those with 9-12 trucks that need drl, not sure what the solution is....

Creative wiring, yes the option for the signal lights are not there but what I did was added a accessory wire to the circuit, when truck came on so did my "drl signal lights" with my headlights being completely reserved for when I wanted them on or off. Your choice of whatever lights you want on as your drl, either fogs, turn signals, aftermarket, or parking (though these aren't bright at all)

You need a DRL Relay Harness.

How does the circuit work? I'd probably use the fog lights for the drl, but I'm not sure how to change where the drl power is routed to.

Well your first step has to be getting the dealer to turn OFF your drl feature. It's way overly complicated to bypass the drl option on our trucks. Once that is done you just basically add a wire from the relay box to the positive wire on each of the fog lamps
