Driving myself insane trying to buy my first truck

just need to calm down. If you go into a dealership this excited, they'll try to screw you for sure. Well, most will. There are some good guys out there in the sales world, but there are more a-holes that make them look bad

Man....listen. guys here will tell you everything from I paid 5k over msrp cause the market is hot where I live to guys saying they got 39k off of a 30k truck. There are always details left out. Like getting raped on their trade in, paying 6k for an extended warranty etc. Don't listen to anyone other than your own gut. Find the one you want and get it/enjoy it. Don't second guess yourself!

I remember the insanity! I went both routes, looking at both new and used up here in Canada. I finally figured out that eventually something will fall in my lap. It takes patience and a lot of looking around online, but you will find it eventually. In my case it was a 2011 5.0 with XTR trim/Tow driven by a little old lady in the rural area for only 37,000km. It looks brand new and the price was 24,900k Cdn which I talked down to 24k. Original dealer window sticker was in the glove compartment, $42k truck. Oh, the original bill of sale was in there too showing 51k. She had traded up to a 2013.

Just went in to my local dealer to look at a 2011 Screw XLT with convenience/plus/chrome package. It has ~36,000 miles on it and they were asking $30,900
Doing my homework I found that it was an auction truck, needed all new tires and a good detailing. Also needed some new front rotors & breaks.
I started my initial offer at 62% MSRP (residual value on an off lease) which was $24,500. The sales manager said it was hard to find used trucks and the best he could do was $29,500 +TTT. I showed all my evidence that there is no way it cost that much. Was basically told to go pound sand....... ARRRRHHHHH! No way im paying that for a 3 year old truck.

I paid 32k for my 2013 F150 screw XLT 302a 4x4 brand new. It was a straight buy with no trade in. I purchased it at Freeway Ford in Bloomington, MN. No way I would pay what your dealer wants on that used truck.

getting a good deal is in large part about timing. your not trying to buy at a good time. generally the last few days before the end of the month and if you can do that near the end of the year or as the next model year rolls in you will get a better deal as they try to clear inventory.
you want that desperate sales man at the end of the month trying to make his quota on your side.

Don't we all wish we could get 10k or more off. When I bought mine I only got 2500 off msrp. The dealer did give me 20k for my 08 though so that made it affordable. But where I live we have 1 dealership and it's ford so my family buys all of out cars through them so they try and help as much as possible. But seriously don't get all hung up on rebates, it's more important to get the truck you want (at least I think so).

I bought a new leftover '13 around the middle of February.
I got my best deal by doing research, a lot of it, too much if you ask my spouse. I narrowed down my choice to what I wanted, then looked at every dealer in my area (quite a few). Almost all dealers have online inventory and most in my area had an "internet price" that included all discounts and potential rebates. I listed all the models with variations on options and prices. I had a spreadsheet with over 30 trucks listed, I do not recommend this unless you want to drive yourself crazy.
Some things to be aware of when using internet pricing.
1) some dealers list the MSRP as "Total MSRP" and some list it as "Total Before Discounts". Be careful as this can make it look like you are getting more off the truck than you actually are.
you can see the window sticker, which shows both those numbers, of any new F150 here, just put the actual VIN # at the end

2) You may not qualify for all the rebates they are listing
3) If you say I want $2000 off they will probably tell you they are already below what they can sell the truck for and are losing money. If you can show them the identical truck across town for $2000 less they will match it in a heartbeat.
