Driver cv shaft problem.. differential?
Hello,
I am stuck on this new problem I caused...
So I went trailing on a yearly run we have local. Part of the trail was going over a mountain.. i broke my driver side inner joint. Destroyed. So I went to autozone and bought a new one.
Installed it.. was fine until i turned on the 4x4.
I hear a banging noise and I can see my front wheel sorta jump after 20 mph. Its a banging rotational sound. My experience tells me its the shaft..
I removed the shaft and while pulling it it became undone from the transmission side. The boot now looks all stretched.
Opened the shaft and yup, 1 of the ring bearing is off and banging around and the other one its lock became undone.
How does this happen?! its a reman axle.
Do you guys think its my differential? I am a little bit scared... tomorrow ill be getting the replacement shaft and hopefully thats it...
Anyone ever get this problem? Could I have broken something inside the differential? Shining a light inside yields no results.. please help!
Of course it drives fine when the 4x4 is off ad no noise. Only in 4x4 when the there is power to the axle. front diff looks normal, in the same place. Mounts are good. No leaks.

What brand of shaft was it. I have never baught parts from auto zone because of quality reasons. I would replace it with a oem one. Did you have the shaft pushed all the way into the differential till you heard a click noise. Have you check anything like u joints on the drive shaft or maybe the passenger side is messing up now. Just a few ideas I am throwing out there.
When I opened the boot to inspect the transmission side joing was appart. the bearings on the 2 of the 3 little arms were bad. One was completely off and the other had the lock all twisted.
The transfer case spins fine and doesnt clunk or anything. Ill report on saturday when I get my other shaft. i hope its the shaft because I cant afford a transfer case or a differential at this time. No warrany 90 thousand miles
OK.. so I replaced it and problem is still there. I noticed the shaft seems to bind. What is the difference between the SFI moden and EFI engine model? I have the 4.6 to 6 speed transmission... im so lost.. i took and put the parts at least 4 to 6 times to make sure and every time.. the shaft seems to bind... i checked.. cross member is not damaged, diffrential is in the same place. I removed the shaft and spun the differential by hand and its smooth.. im SO lost and I need my truck.
I have a feeling autozone is giving me the wrong shaft... I opened it and its a 3 way style joint.... when I look at the service manual.. it shows a ball bearing with the crown looking thing joint.. its different.... i think..
Also I remember by old half shaft having bearings... theres even some that fell out in my driveway from my old shaft... this new shaft is a
High Speed Tripod Plunge Joint PRJ
It has no bearings.... and it has less angle tolerance...Im willing to bet I have the wrong shaft!
