Drive shaft snapped at 103K miles

I would take the truck somewhere else, personally. How could they miss that?!

Yeah, it pisses me off that they gave it such a shoddy examination.
I'm beginning to doubt if they ever checked the diff oil during oil change service over the years.

It took ME to point that out while the f-kwits were busy pricing a new trans.
The truck is still parked in the lot; it hasn't been in the shop yet.
The new shaft was installed outside by one guy, but still ...

I wonder what blew thru the metal casing. Hope it didn't kill anyone.

I want to see the diff after its opened up! I've seen blown diff gears but never seen one blow pieces through the cover!
It also looks like there is a large amount of oil on the housing and axle tube, wonder if it's been leaking and diff oil ran empty leading to diff gears imploding due to no lube?

If the diff froze up from lack of lube as expected, the OP would know it. I suspect something major broke and rattled around in the diff until it got trapped. Then the forces increased and BAM.
That's my scientific explanation.

I really looks like the diff has been leaking pretty bad to me.

Worst case scenario all three got damaged. **** happens in threes.
And of course they'd charge me for a second new drive shaft. It's not their fault my diff was blown (would be their logic).
The drive shaft serves no purpose on the truck right now. I want it removed and the trans tested without it, if that makes sense.
Even if it appears okay, I'm not sure how this chain reaction of demolition didn't stress the trans to the point where it'll fail in the near future.

I wonder how to test a transmission with no load on it. You could look for codes set....
But I see your point. The broken driveshaft is evidence of tremendous torque between the transmission and the rear axle. I have not heard of people failing the drive shaft even with hopped up engines and large tires so I wonder what the weak link in the driveline is.
