I've got a suggestion. Don't let the tank get that empty before filling it. Beside, with the prices of fuel going up so fast, it will cost more to fill it if you wait.

If you can, buy your gas at Krogers. Since I got a Kroger Plus card and get points for groceries and drugs, I've never gone over $100. $.10 to $1.00 off per gallon helps! I don't go empty but gas up shortly after the low gas warning.

I don't see the logic behind that. I have a big fuel tank, and I want to use it. I don't understand your second argument either. It does not matter how much a fill up costs because the overall per mile cost is the same. You'll end up paying the same in the end.
I prefer to fill up in two steps then, rather than keeping on filling up half tanks.

The one god thing about a bigger tank is you get more free fuel when you take delivery of your new ride. Other than that I never minded the smaller one.

Should never let your fuel go below 1/4 tank as the fuel pump cools better when immersed in gasoline. Letting it drop to empty will cause premature fuel pump failure.
For what its worth

I use safeway gas, and use the points to get 1.00 off per gallon and at 36 gallons I dont hit 100.00 to shut off the pump.... I fillup about every two to four weeks and use the gas points... Today it was 3.09 per gallon 32 gallons was 98.00 so I did not hit the 100.00 mark.....

Most of the cooling is done by the fuel running through the pump, not the fuel it is sitting in. Maybe you don't want to run it empty all the time and then get $5 worth of gas, but running it until the indicator turns on, then filling up all the way certainly won't hurt anything.

Pumps shut off at $85 around here. Diesel is over $4/gal now. My work truck has two tanks and takes about 46 gal to fill. In the summer that last about a week if I'm lucky.

Around here pre-pay is not usually required. Maybe some places after hours may require pre pay. If you wish to pay at the pump - you can usually use debit or credit card. The pump will ask if a pre determined value is sufficient say $100 or if you wish a different amount. Pick your amount and then your charge will be pre-authorized just like a restaurant. Last year I was in Florida the pumps asked for your zip code before you could pre authorize your card. Being from out of state I had to go into the station and prepay before I got a drop of fuel. That was a royal Pita. Every where there seemed to be pay first - guessing how much to fill your tank was a crap shoot. Too many gas and dash I guess down there...
