Does it mess up the ECU, or engine, to regularly switch between the various octanes? I use all octanes between 87 and 93, based on where I am located for my job. Some of our yards stock 87, some 89, some 91 and some 93. I don't really pay any attention, just fill up with whatever is available.

Please, this is not meant to be an MPG vs. Octane thread...

I assume the ECU doesn't monitor octane, only knock, or pre ignition, so it would seem to me it doesn't matter.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't causing any potentional harm.

No, it doesn't hurt, and yes, your truck had sensors that determine octane and ethanol content. This determines which map your truck uses.

I know you asked about octane ratings, page 409 in manual states if FFV that it is best not to alternate between gasoline and E85. Just thought I would add this in case anyone was wondering about the different fuels, but looks like octane rating doesnt matter as long as it is 87 or higher.

Assuming you are running a stock OEM tune, then no, swapping octanes whenever you want wont hurt anything. Just dont run E85 on the Ecoboost.

Not to thread jack...but does switching between custom tunes that run 87 or 91 damage anything? I know if you run a 91 octane you have to run 91 octane. I just want to know if switching between 87 and 91 octane tunes (and running there perspective octanes) damages anything? Thanks.

No, long as you have the right fuel in the vehicle, swap tunes all you want. I've swapped tunes in my Mustang prob hundreds of times, depending on what I want to run that day.

Wont hurt it, electronics monitor so much in the engine, ie: spark knock and detonation to change ignition timing to compensate for fuel octane differences so it doesnt matter what octane or different blend of octane it is, just make sure there is no e-85 ethanol going into that engine, not recommended for eco boost
