Your truck is an 8 year old Ecoboost with 69,000 on it. Time to tune it?

I have a very nice eco with 69K. Really would like a tuner. Risk vs reward worth it. I worry I tune it then I blow a turbo. What do you all Think? I was thinking SCTX4 with just using canned tunes. No, I’m not racing it and I don’t romp on it. I drive reasonable but like the power I could get.

I highly doubt it would be a turbo to go. The canned tunes are pretty mild, but I think you would be better off with a custom tune from Gearhead or 5*. They are both known for being on the conservative side and utilizing a lot of the safety measures that the OEM tune uses. Bonus with Gearhead, is you can get his adaptive tuning and run whatever octane on the same tune.

My truck has been tuned since it had less than 1000 miles on it.

Tunes are only worth it if you get custom ones.

I'd strongly disagree with that. My "canned" made a world of difference in the way my truck performs. Not saying a custom tune is not worth it, but I love my truck the way it is.

Think twice!

If I could do it all over. I would not have ran a tune.

if you can handle the financial cost of replacing an engine then go for it. Otherwise, I can tell you the tune in mine certainly didn’t help. New engine, turbos $13k later.

A 5-Star Tune is nice and on the new tunes they can give you the mpg gains at part throttle and the power on full throttle.
Also their tow tune will be pretty conservative. There new tunes also work with the mode changes so your not stuck with towing shift points in daily driving.

Just so you now his 5 Star Tune will only work on your truck if you have the same Strategy Code. 5-Star will email you tunes for your truck at a reasonable price though.

I just tuned my 2014 with 41,000 miles on it. I waited for the warranty to expire before I did. I am definitely enjoying the new performance. 87 oct pert/tow 5 star tune from an X4. Call stage3motorsports and they will price match for $450.

I had a 2011 that was tuned for almost all of the 40k miles I had it and now my 2013 has 104k miles on it and it has been tuned for about 85k of it. Both trucks tuned with MPT custom tunes.

MPT does a fantastic job of giving you great power and throttle response, and only raises the boost 1-2psi at most over stock. The difference is all in the fuel and timing. I've datalogged my truck more times than I can count to submit back to MPT to continue to verify that no changes need to be made and that is running safely. The datalogs confirm the only slight boost level increase and the knock monitors all of the fuel and timing adjustments. They have always been very responsive and careful to ensure that I have the best tune possible.

So between the two trucks, tuned well over 100k miles without a single issue. The only issue I have on my end is making sure that the spark plugs get changed every 15-20k miles to ensure the spark is as strong and consistent as possible. Bottom line, it is up to you to get those datalogs sent and keep your truck as maintained as possible. You can't go wrong with any of the major known companies out there.
