Even the new design has its problems. The nutsert that goes into tailgate keeps loosening and pulling out. It will tighten back up but after a few drops it will start to pull out. I'm thinking about just drilling and tapping and install the ball bolt.

It may if you flip the strut upside down when using truck with tailgate down.

Who are you folks talking to at DeeZee to get your replacement strut? The person I talked with in customer service would not even begin to talk with me unless I could send him the proof of purchase.......for something that I bought two years ago???? I had so much trouble with the strut and the cord that I left on on for only a couple of weeks, then took it off and threw it out......are you folks able to get the replacement strut without the receipt.....

Mine didn't come with the foam pad and the cable is wearing the paint off of the tailgate.

My original one was so bad that it was threatening to break the tail light because it was binding so badly next to it.....before that could happen, I took it off and threw it away.
I would be interested to see if the new design alleviates that problem....

I put the new design on my 2013 a couple weeks ago. No problems yet except for the tailgate comes down much faster than the original design I had on my 2011. Is there a way to increase the resistance in the cylinder? I am thinking about installing a second one on the passenger to try to slow the tailgate down.

I've had one on both my 2010 and 2013. Easy to install and very helpful. Should come with the truck IMO.

As another poster says the cost isn't extreme if it sux bad I'll yank it. I went to me local truck/car shop and picked one up. Manufacturing date on the package as seen on the picture is 04/13 and it seems to have a blue bottle in it, possible Lock Tight? After opening it the instructions show up to model year 2004-2012 so they didn't update the instructions for the blue lock tight but thanks to the post I'll put it on every thread to ensure they don't back out.

I'll report on the shock/piston "stiffness" after the install but by hand it was a real SOB to extract the rod so we'll see.

I ordered mine from Amazon about 2-3 months ago and received the same one as in the version 3 pic form the OP.

Been very happy with it thus far, although I only open the tailgate on weekends to get my golf clubs out of the back.
