Dee Zee EZ Down Tailgate Assist Kit
#112
I just put mine on yesterday using the a serrated SS nut instead of the Nutsert that came with it. The serrated nut tightens right up against the inside of the tailgate and prevents the nut from spinning and coming loose. I used them extensively on the restoration of my 1984 Jeep CJ-7 and they never come loose or corrode.
I also found a replacement 10mm ball stud from McMaster-Carr.com if I ever decide to or need to replace the stud in the future. the ball stud that comes with the Dee Zee has M6 threads and can be a little loose in the F150 tailgate hole if using the nut method. The one from McMaster-Carr has 5/16-18 thread and 3/4" thread length. Fits better in the elongated hole. Part #9512K88

I really think the only way to do this right and make it last with this kit is to drill a hole in the side of the tailgate and tap it. I've done this on both of my f150's and I've never had a problem.

I didn't read all 11 pages of this thread so Im not sure if it was mentioned already.
Not sure if it was this website, but there was someone out there that had step by step instructions on how to do this mod with out the cheap nutsert. To make it short and simple, you just mount the ball directly to the hole with a washer and nut on the inside. He actually shows you tips and tricks to accomplish the job. If i can find it ill post it.
Here it is:

I'd love to do this but I've read so many things about which one works, which one doesn't, nut here, other part there - I just don't know where to start.
Is there a model # that works, right out of the box and without having to jerry-rig it to work as it's supposed to? Or is this still a kind of "see what you get and then do XYZ to make it work" kind of thing?

Trust me, if you go into the project knowing you're going to do the nut and washer from behind trick, it's just as fast if not faster than fooling with the nutsert and tool.
I got mine off amazon and the picture was wrong but part number correct so I got the new one by stabilus.
DZ43200 is the part number I believe.

No real need to drill and tap, you can us a small washer inside the oval hole then two additional washers (one on either side) and a nut. It wont move and as long as you use some thread locker, it will hold up.
Here is the fix for anyone who installed per their recommendations and needs to remount it. http://www.fordraptorforum.com/f11/e...-solved-15369/
