I also found a replacement 10mm ball stud from McMaster-Carr.com if I ever decide to or need to replace the stud in the future. the ball stud that comes with the Dee Zee has M6 threads and can be a little loose in the F150 tailgate hole if using the nut method. The one from McMaster-Carr has 5/16-18 thread and 3/4" thread length. Fits better in the elongated hole. Part #9512K88
I went this route and added a washer to fully coverr the elongated hole. Install took 5 minutes and am happy with results. thanks for info.

Did you use the 10mm ball stud from McMaster-Carr or the one that came from DeeZee?

I really think the only way to do this right and make it last with this kit is to drill a hole in the side of the tailgate and tap it. I've done this on both of my f150's and I've never had a problem.

I didn't read all 11 pages of this thread so Im not sure if it was mentioned already.
Not sure if it was this website, but there was someone out there that had step by step instructions on how to do this mod with out the cheap nutsert. To make it short and simple, you just mount the ball directly to the hole with a washer and nut on the inside. He actually shows you tips and tricks to accomplish the job. If i can find it ill post it.

Here it is:

I'd love to do this but I've read so many things about which one works, which one doesn't, nut here, other part there - I just don't know where to start.

Is there a model # that works, right out of the box and without having to jerry-rig it to work as it's supposed to? Or is this still a kind of "see what you get and then do XYZ to make it work" kind of thing?

This is what I ordered from Amazon. I've had it on for 3 months and it's still securely in place (I installed using the nutsert). I will see how long this stays in place and do the mod if necessary.

If you get the current version the only thing you'll want to do is either drill and tap the tailgate or use the other method which I've done and it works great.

Trust me, if you go into the project knowing you're going to do the nut and washer from behind trick, it's just as fast if not faster than fooling with the nutsert and tool.

I got mine off amazon and the picture was wrong but part number correct so I got the new one by stabilus.

DZ43200 is the part number I believe.

When I bought mine, I went back and forth with Dee Zee to make sure I had the newest model that didn't bind against the tailgate and had the correct nutsert. I worked great for about 5 months until the temps started to drop down then it got really loose and i had to switch to a nut method. I tapped a couple of wrenches together and a nut/washer that fit the original nut that went into the nutsert. It has been perfect for the last 3 months (cold temps).

No real need to drill and tap, you can us a small washer inside the oval hole then two additional washers (one on either side) and a nut. It wont move and as long as you use some thread locker, it will hold up.

Here is the fix for anyone who installed per their recommendations and needs to remount it. http://www.fordraptorforum.com/f11/e...-solved-15369/
