Had the original design that had a bunch of problems and had the foam piece. I ordered the new version off autoanything.com and it came in today and it is way better than the original version. It also works way better as it lowers the tailgate slower. I have the step!

Well worth spending the extra money to get the new version vs making the old one work.

Has anyone done this mod with the remote unlock mod? I'm thinking of doing both but don't want the tailgate to pop open when I unlock all the doors.

The remote unlock mode only unlocks the gate handle mechanism. It does not unlatch the tailgate from the bed so there is no way it will open by itself.

It is similar to unlocking your door. You still have to pull the handle to open it.

The remote unlock (pop & lock) does not open the tailgate, it only locks or unlocks the tailgate when you lock or unlock the doors. You still have to lift the handle to open the tailgate. The tailgate assist it just a small shock that supports some of the weight of the tailgate so that it doesn't drop down so fast if you are not helping it down.

The pop & lock is a must have because you never have to worry about your tailgate getting stolen or worrying about manually unlocking with the key if you need in the bed. The tailgate assist would be helpfull only if you had one hand full and needed to open the tailgate with one hand (and didn't have the strength to help the gate down with your free hand. It is safer if you have small kids that might be crawling around on your truck because if they pull the handle it won't come crashing down on them.
