Just another reason to do as much work as we can ourselves. Those goons aren't using a torque wrench to tighten it....120 inlbs / 10 ftlbs for my 05 5.4.....Along with a new drain plug gasket each time.

It's the little things.

I use the torque wrench, but a new gasket everytime? My last truck still had the original gasket at 160,000km...

This is a minor issue, the drain plugs are designed to strip (softer metal) so the oil pan threads (hardened steel) are saved, you can get a new plug at any auto parts store with gasket for less than $5.00. I find it hard to believe the dealer would give anyone a hard time over something so minor, would be good customer service. Apparently the dealer you went to have a bunch of idiots on staff.

Needless to say I wouldn't bring it back to them.

Yeah, they'll end up putting the same plug back in with teflon tape. That will be their solution.

What we used to do is inform the customer of the properties of the plug and why it stripped out, to save a very expensive repair as a new oil pan would be. Never had one single customer complain about having to pay an extra $3. I'm also talking about regular repeat customers.

Actually after looking at those inserts some of you posted I see that that is what they already put in it and the insert may be what is stripped. The bolt doesn't look like the threads are stripped.

So who installed the insert?

Not I. The last time I changed my oil, prior to Ford changing the oil pan gasket it didn't have one, and the bolt tightened just fine. They must have stripped it and put the insert in during the gasket change. The dealership is the only other place to touch it.
