In my opinion, when the "hold their value" debate comes up, I always think of that in regards to the 5-10 years old range. New cars always drop fast, especially when traded in. You have to sell privately to get you money back.

Not sure why this would **** anybody off. When I was shopping for my truck in 2011 and trading in my 2008 Ram MegaCab Laramie fully loaded with KBB showing a $27-29k trade, I had one dealer offer $18k. It was so low that I couldn't help but laugh and truly thought the whole thing was just too funny, just told the salesman that he was a crazy idiot and left. I ended up getting $25,150 for it elsewhere which was still low but hey, its a dodge.
Laugh it off and move on. Most dealers are asshats and will rarely do what is in your best interest.

I got $4000 more than what the dealer would give me for trade in on my old truck by selling it privately, and saved $5000 buying my current truck privately. $9,000 in my pocket simply by avoiding stealerships. Not to mention the $1000 in 3m film the previous owner installed and $500 in other accessories.

You paid too much. Plain and simple. A 4/5 year old truck with 50k on it and minimal options isn't worth big money.
The dealer would it put it on their lot for around 20k or so. They don't work for free remember.
Feel free to sell it outright and get more $ for it if you choose to.

Another thing is some dealerships simply don't want used cars, i tried taking the '12 XLT i traded in to a random Ford dealer, they offered me 24k. (Payed 34k exactly a year ago, 20,000KM on the truck (~12k miles) I took it back to the dealer i bought it from and got 30k on trade. Moral of the story is shop it around...

Yes SHOP around!!
Our 2008 FX4 we leased 3 yr , same truck on there lot at the time was selling for 26,000, our buy out was 17k and change had 51,000Km's , they offered us 18K and said it would cost them 4K to put it through there shop, Which is load of stinky crap! We had the maintance package on it, so all the up dates were done new battery, new brakes, tires were still 70%, glass was good, this truck was minty and still is. We were looking at getting a lariat or HD 250, but wife wanted to keep it so we did and I went bought myself a new truck.
We said shove it and bought it out for 17K, and next truck went to a different dealership, This Dealer we bought Escape, Explorer, Mustang, and 05 f150, 08 FX4 and they were higher on my new 2012 XTR, I found away better deal from another Dealership and I shopped around for 2 months and so far best dealership in every aspect. in our area we have like 13 cities joined at the hip of each other in the Vancouver area Lower Mainland so was lots to research, my area alone had like 6 dealers to choose from. which helped in getting a better price and deal.
pays to shop around

Maybe this is a sign to keep your truck and get it paid off. Your truck still has a ton of useable life left. I guess I am not the norm, because I plan on keeping my truck for 10 years, but I cannot believe the amount of people on this forum who trade up after only 1 year or 2 years. You will never get ahead that way and always have a car payment.

I 100% completely understand 26 - 17 is 9.
I also understand that the taxes are not dealership responsibility... just how it is....
With 12k cash I put down..... 1k offered equity for trade....... I physically will have lost 11k cash out of pocket in ten months. not blaming anyone..... its just the way it is. Hard to accept considering. That's all.... lol

I'm assuming they asked you how much you owe on your truck before telling you the trade in amount? This is a common sales tactic because many people just like to hear they are getting more than they owe. It doesn't even matter how much you put down originally.
